Art Adamson Invitational Day 1: Texas A&M Sweeps Two Events to Kick Off Meet

Texas A&M’s annual Art Adamson Invitational kicked off on Wednesday from College Station.

A large contingent of competition from around the country game together to start the meet.

The events on Day 1 were the women’s and men’s 200 freestyle relay, 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 free and 400 medley relay.

The Aggies lead the men’s team scores with 492, followed by LSU (298), Utah (202) and Air Force (107).

For the women, the Aggies also lead with 315, followed by UCLA (260), LSU (222), Washington State (109), San Diego State (109), Utah (106) and Houston (82).

Women’s 200 Free Relay

LSU earned the first win of the meet, winning the 200 free relay behind Reagan Osborne, Katarina Milutinovich, Michaela De Villiers and Megan Barnes. The quartet finished in 1:28.88.

Texas A&M’s Olivia Theall, Chloe Stepanek, Kaitlyn Owens and Bobbi Kennett took second in 1:29.29.

UCLA’s Brooks Schaffer, Ana Jih-Schiff, Sarah Bennetts and Maddy Wright took third in 1:29.81.

 

Men’s 200 Free Relay

The Texas A&M men started fast, winning the first men’s event of the meet.

Baylor Nelson, Connor Foote, Carter Nelson and Clayton Conklin got to the wall in 1:18.23 to win the 200 free relay. The team dropped 1:45 from its seed time.

LSU’s Pawel Uryniuk, Jere Hribar, Andrew Garon and Simon Casey took second in 1:18.81.

Utah’s Jaek Horner, Will Woodall, Davis Stachelek and Jackson Kehler took third in 1:19.37.

 

Women’s 500 Freestyle

Texas A&M went 1-2-3 in the 500 freestyle to build a lead in the meet.

Abby Grottle won the event in 4:41.58, followed by Chloe Stepanek in 4:42.60 and Hayden Miller in 4:43.22.

UCLA’s Ashley Kolessar took fourth in 4:46.58.

 

Men’s 500 Freestyle

LSU’s Jacob Pishko was faster than the field by four seconds to win the 500 free. The sophomore got to the wall in 4:19.65.

Texas A&M’s Trey Dickey took second in 4:23.21, ahead of Utah’s Jakub Walter (4:24.30).

 

Women’s 200 IM

UCLA showed some real dominance in the 200 IM, sweeping the top three spots in an impressive performance.

Paige MacEachern won the race in 1:57.20 to finish ahead of teammates Rosie Murphy (1:57.93) and Ana Jih-Schiff (1:58.89).

 

Men’s 200 IM

Texas A&M made it another sweep, this time 1-2-3-4-5 in a dominating performance by the Aggies.

Baylor Nelson won the event in 1:41.33, followed by Logan Brown (1:43.07), Alex Sanchez (1:44.42), Vincent Ribeiro (1:44.85) and Munzy Kabbara (1:45.04).

 

Women’s 50 Freestyle

San Diego State junior Meredith Smithbaker edged the field to claim the 50 freestyle win, closing out the women’s individual events on Day 1

Smithbaker got to the wall in 22.24, a near four-second drop from her seed time.

Utah sophomore Erin Palmer was just behind, finishing second in 22.41.

LSU’s Michaela De Villiers took third (22.46), just ahead of teammate Katarina Milutinovich (22.48) and Texas A&M’s Chloe Stepanek (22.51).

 

Men’s 50 Freestyle

LSU freshman Jere Hribar dropped three seconds from his seed time to win the men’s 50 free in 19.45.

Texas A&M took the next three spots with Connor Foote (19.57), Clayton Conklin (20.00) and Carter Nelson (20.40).

 

Women’s 400 Medley Relay

Texas A&M’s Miranda Grana, Bobbi Kennett, Olivia Theall and Chloe Stepanek won the 400 medley relay in 3:31.02 to close the women’s portion of the first night.

UCLA’s Fay Lustria, Sarah Bennetts, Aislinn Walsh and Brooke Schaffer took second in 3:35.44.

Washington State’s Anna Rauchholz, Emily Lundgren, Dori Hathazi and Madison Parker took third in 3:36.03.

 

Men’s 400 Medley Relay

Texas A&M took the top two spots in the final relay of the night with the A and B teams going 1-2.

Thomas Shomper, Alex Sanchez, Connor Foote and Baylor Nelson won the event in 3:04.62.

Tyler Hulst, Logan Brown, Clayton Conklin and Carter Nelson were second (3:08.39).

LSU’s Griffin Curtis, Mitch Mason, Pawel Uryniuk and Jere Hribar took third (3:09.80).
