Army West Point Begins 2021-22 Recruiting with Verbals from Jackson Pogue, Ian Shahan
NEW COMMITS: The United States Military Academy has received a pair of verbal commitments for the 2021-22 season and beyond from Southlake, Texas native Jackson Pogue and Ian Shahan of Belle Vernon, Penn.
Both swimmers will arrive in West Point as members of Army’s Class of 2025. Under head coach Brandt Nigro, the Black Knights finished second in the team standings at the 2020 Patriot League Championships.
JACKSON POGUE
Primarily a butterflyer, Pogue does his club swimming with North Texas Nadadores and owns the Junior National cut in the 200 fly. He most recently finaled in the 200 fly at College Station Sectionals and achieved four best times at Austin Sectionals last summer before going on to compete at Des Moines Futures.
His best times include:
- 100 fly – 50.06
- 200 fly – 1:50.86
- 200 free – 1:43.13
- 500 free – 4:35.32
Also competing for Southlake High School, Pogue is a four-time Texas UIL 6A Region 02 Championship finalist. He earned bronze in the 100 fly and took sixth in the 500 free as a junior while finishing fourth in the 100 fly and 12th in the 200 free during his sophomore season.
IAN SHAHAN
He told Swimming World:
“I was drawn to the service academies because of my desire to serve my country and continue my academic and athletic career at a world class institution. I felt a strong connection with the team and coaching staff at West Point. Coach Brandt is building the program and I am honored to be a part of it.”
A talented sprinter, Shahan swims year-round with Upper Saint Clair Swim Club and owns three Juniors cuts with one U.S. Open standard. He notched a best time at Juniors East in December and finaled in the 50 fly at NCSAs in 2019. Last summer, he achieved four lifetime bests at NCSAs where he got a second-swim in the 50m free.
His best times include:
- 50 free – 20.44
- 100 free – 44.68
- 100 fly – 48.83
- 100 back – 50.55
A rising senior at Belle Vernon Area High School, Shahan is a four-time Pennsylvania 2A State Championship finalist. The NISCA and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American won both the 100 free and 100 back as a sophomore and was the runner-up in the 100 back and 100 fly during his rookie campaign.
