Arizona Swimming Sweeps Grand Canyon in Season Opener

The Arizona Wildcats proved victorious over the Grand Canyon Antelopes in their first meet of the season with a final score of 219 – 76 for the women and 204 – 90 for the men.

After a short weather delay, Arizona started and finished strong with an impressive number of top three sweeps from both the men and women.  On the men’s side, Arizona swimming took the top three spots in the 50, 100 and 500 free, 100 back, 100 fly and the 400 IM. On the women’s side, the Cats took the top three in the 100 and 200 free, 100 and 200 breast, 200 back, and the 400 IM.

Kelly Wetteland took home her first two collegiate wins in the 100 and 200 breast for Arizona swimming, while Hayden Ghufran, Haakon Naughton and Billy Oates took home their firsts in the 500 free, 200 fly and the 100 back, respectively.

In the women’s meet, Arizona swimming’s Stella Copeland won the 1000 free (10:34.89), Tia Lindsay won the 200 free (1:52.05) and 500 free (5:07.39), Axana Merckx won the 100 backstroke (56.22), Kelly Wetteland won the 100 breaststroke (1:03.61) and 200 breaststroke (2:19.39), Julia Heimstead won the 200 butterfly (1:59.13) and 100 free (50.51), Alyssa Schwengel won the 50 free (23.53), Daisy Anderson won the 200 back (2:01.87), Maddy Burt won the 100 butterfly (53.91) and Delaney Schnell won 1-meter (331.05) and 3-meter (340.50).

In the men’s meet, Arizona swimming’s Mason Nyboer won the 1000 free (9:23.01), Hunter Ingram won the 200 free (1:37.87), 100 fly (49.06) and 100 free (44.93), Billy Oates won the 100 backstroke (49.53), Ryan Foote won the 100 breaststroke (55.85), Haakon Naughton won the 200 butterfly (1:48.25), Seth Miller won the 50 free (20.32), Hayden Ghufran won the 500 free (4:33.41), Bjorn Markentin won 1-meter (316.80), Austin Flaute won 3-meter (348.45),

Grand Canyon’s Samuel Jennings won the 200 backstroke (1:52.33). Jonathan Rom won the 200 breaststroke (2:02.41).
