Arizona State Opens Herbie Behm Era in Record Fashion
The Arizona State men’s and women’s swimming and diving team swept UNLV in their season opener, the first wins under head coach Herbie Behm.
The Sun Devils won 28 events in the team’s first sweep of the 2024-25 season, including breaking a 5-year-old school record in the women’s 200-yard medley relay.
The men won 217-83 and the women won 236-84.
In the first race of the season, Mirham Sheehan, Iza Adame, Julia Ulmann and Caroline Bentz set the school record in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:37.05, breaking the 2019 record set in 2019 of 1:37.26.
Ilya Kharun won three individual races, the 100 fly, 200 fly and the 200 IM, including being a part of the winning 200-yard medley relay team Friday evening.
Charli Brown was victorious in the 200 IM (1:59.25) and the 200 free (1:46.58).
Making her Sun Devil debut, grad transfer Caroline Bentz won the 200y backstroke (1:55.29) and was part of two winning relay teams. (200-yard medley relay and the 400 free relay).
Also in her Arizona State debut, Miriam Sheehan was part of the record-breaking relay. She won the 100 backstroke (55.67) by one-hundredth of a second over Bentz.
In her debut, freshman Julia Ulmann won the 100 fly (52.77) and was part of the 200y medley relay.
In his freshman debut, Frenchman Lucien Vergnes won the 200 breast (1:55.67) and placed third in the 100 breast (52.93).
