Arizona State Men Stay Unbeaten With Rout of Grand Canyon
Arizona State’s men’s swimming and diving team moved to 7-0 on the year with a decisive win over in-state rival Grand Canyon on Saturday.
The Sun Devils claimed a 233-66 victory on the men’s side. The ASU women won, 248-48.
ASU mixed up the events to start the spring semester. Its nominal C relay won the 200 medley, with Ilya Kharun’s fly split of 19.26 helping the team of Quinlan Gould, Filip Senc-Samardzic and Leon Roden win. Kharun won the 100 free in 42.15 after finishing third in the 200 free behind Tiago Behar (winning in 1:34.79) and Jonny Kulow. Senc-Samardzic was second in the 100 fly, then won the 200 fly.
Andy Dobrzanski swept the breaststroke events, Lucien Vergnes reigned over backstroke and Daniel Matheson won the 500 free and 400 individual medley. Tolu Young handled the sprints, going 19.90 in the 50 free and 47.62 to edge Kulow by .07 second sin the 100 fly.
Arizona State won both diving events, with Lane Stallworth on 1-meter and Caleb Liban on 3-meter.
Caroline Bentz led the women to an easy victory. She led off the winning 200 medley and 400 free relays, with Erin Milligan taking a leg on both winning quartets. Bentz went 1:47.41 to win the 200 free and 48.73 in the 100 free.
Alexa Reyna won the distance events. Hana Edwards was second in both backstroke events, to Payden Rafferty in the 100 and Ella Guilfoil in the 200. Iza Adame won the 100 breast with Emma Gehlert second, then they switched places for the 200 breast. Julia Ullman won the 200 fly and was second to Bentz in the 100 free.
