Ariarne Titmus Lays Down A 4:00.49 To Swim Away With The Australian 400m Title On The Gold Coast
Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus has laid down one of her fastest ever times in the middle of hard training, clocking 4:00.49 to defend her National 400m title on the Gold Coast tonight.
The 22-year-old from St Peters Western, QLD was never headed – out in 1:58.27 and swimming away to record a comfortable win over World Short Course champion Lani Pallister (Griffith University, QLD) 4:05.86 (2:00.71) with New Zealand Olympian Eve Thomas, who is training alongside Ariarne Titmus and under master coach Dean Boxall, third home in a huge personal best of 4:06.10 (2:02.41).
Titmus admitted swimming at the moment is like driving a test car on an empty tank of fuel, saying she went out to have a good crack.
“It’s hard to know where you are at at the moment with training being pretty tough, “Titmus said after her return to racing after Canadian Summer McIntosh broke her world record late last month.
“This meet is more about going out there and seeing what you’ve got while you are a but tired, but that’s fun to have a bit of a mental reprieve and to come here and race and that’s why we do it.”

Ariarne Titmus time takes her to the third fastest in the world for 2023, behind McIntosh (daughter of 1984 Canadian Olympian Jill Horstead) at No 1 with her new WR of 3:56.08 with Katie Ledecky’s 3:59.71 at No. 2.
While Pallister, the daughter of 1988 Australian Olympian Janelle Elford, sitting ninth and Thomas, at No. 10 and she rounds out our “daughters of famous mums” – with her mum, Sarah Hardcastle winning two medals at the 1984 Olympics for England.
