Are You in the Olympic Torch Relay?
Jan. 7. Swimming World and SWIM magazines are planning to highlight swimmers — both current and past — who are taking part in the Olympic Torch Relay for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt lake City.
If you are a torchbearer and either are or were a competitive swimmer, or are currently a Masters swimmer (or you know of any torchbearers who are/were swimmers), please contact Phil Whitten at philw@swiminfo.com
As of today, we know of only two swimmers taking part in the Olympic Torch Relay: Mel Goldstein and Gary Hall, Sr..
Mel Goldstein is a Masters All-American, a Masters coach, a former USMS President and Indiana University swimmer. He is running his relay leg in Indianapolis today.
Dr. Gary Hall, Sr., was a three-time Olympian (1968,
'72 and '76), who was the USA flag-bearer at the '76 Games and captain of the men's swim team. An eye surgeon in Phoenix, he is currently a Masters swimmer.
Dr. Hall will be running his relay leg in Scottsdale on January 13 or 14.
