Anthony Marcantonio Claims Two Wins During Day Two of Ithaca Sectionals

ITHACA–Crimson Aquatics Anthony Marantonio claimed first-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke 400 IM during day two of the Ithaca Speedo Sectionals.

Erin Falconer of Phoenix Aquatic Club began the session with a first-place finish of 1:47.20 in the women’s 200 free. She was closely followed to the wall by Caroline Wilson of the Jersey Gators. Wilson touched with a time of 1:47.93. Haylee Knight of Weymouth Club Waves took third with 1:48.48.

The men’s 200 free proved to be a close race with Matthew Zugibe of Phoenix Aquatic Club and Ariel Okhtenberg of Matchpoint NYC finishing within .11 seconds of each other. Zugibe managed to finish first with a time of 1:41.23, while Okhtenberg took second with a 1:41.34. George Schnaars, swimming unattached, claimed third with a 1:41.49.

Weston Swimming Inc.’s Sophie Angus took first in the women’s 100 breaststroke with an impressive 1:02.38. Mary Christensen of Chelsea Piers Aquatic Club took second with a 1:03.39, while Anna Vitolins of Schenectady-Saratoga Swim Club finished third with a 1:04.19.

Anthony Marcantonio of Crimson Aquatics swam to an impressive 54.35 finish in the men’s 100 breaststroke. He was followed to the wall by unattached Rafael Van Leeuwaarde who touched with a 54.63. Victor Luo, also swimming unattached, took third with a 55.31.

The top three finishers of the women’s 100 fly touched within .68 seconds of each other. Christina Paspalas of Phoenix Aquatic Club raced to first with a 55.31. Weymouth Club Waves’ Haylee Knight was a close second with a time of 55.47. Danielle Griggs completed the top three with a 55.99.

The intensity from the women’s 100 fly carried over into the men’s 100 fly with the top three finishers touching within a slim .19 seconds of one another. Lucas Reisch, swimming unattached, led the pack with a time of 49.89 to grab first place. Skyy Swim Team’s Ramon Carneiro finished close behind with a 49.95 for second, while David Shakhnazarov of the Jersey Gators claimed third with a 50.08.

Caroline Wilson of the Jersey Gators took first in the women’s 400 IM with a swift 4:20.18, a full six seconds ahead of the pack. Caroline Gmelich of Central Jersey Aquatic Club and Meaghan McGovern of Phoenix Aquatic Club raced for second, but it was Gmelich who won out. Gemlike touched with a 4:26.32 for second, while McGovern took third with a 4:26.55.

Marcantonio claimed his second win of the night in the men’s 400 IM, finishing with a quick 3:51.50. Unattached Dylan Sali grabbed second with a 3:54.99, dropping 9.27 seconds from his prelims time. Graham Barrett of the South Shore YMCA Strypers took third with a 3:58.18.
