Anna Peplowski, Max Reich, Van Mathias Excel in Indiana Sweep of Missouri
The Indiana Hoosiers hosted the Missouri Tigers in a Saturday dual meet in Bloomington, Ind., and head coach Ray Looze’s teams came away with a sweep. Indiana’s women won 171 to 123 behind a dominant performance by sophomore Anna Peplowski, while the Indiana men won 168 to 125.
Peplowski earned three individual wins, topping the 200 freestyle by more than three seconds in 1:46.81 before also winning the 50 free (23.02) and 100 free (50.11). The team of Peplowski, Ashley Turak, Ella Ristic and Kristina Paegle cruised to a win in the 400 free relay in 3:22.42.
Mac Looze, the U.S. national champion this summer in the 200-meter breaststroke, opened individual action by winning the 1000 free (10:10.42), and Brearna Crawford (100 breaststroke, 1:02.36) and Katie Forrester (200 butterfly, 2:01.39) also picked up event wins in the early going. After the first diving break, Mya DeWitt won the 200 backstroke (1:59.79), and Ella Ristic won the 500 free (4:55.76). In diving, Anne Fowler won on the 1-meter (337.65) and 3-meter (316.05) boards. The 200 medley relay went to IU’s team of Kacey McKenna, Looze, Elibeth Broshears and Turak in 1:39.56.
For Missouri, Meredith Rees won the 100 back (54.22) and 200 IM (2:02.98). Malin Grosse took the 200 breast (2:15.81), and Taylor Williams beat the field in the 100 fly (54.26).
In the men’s meet, Indiana’s Brendan Burns, last year’s NCAA champion in the 200 fly and runnerup in the 100 back, won a showdown with Mizzou’s Jack Dahlgren in the 200 free. Dahlgren led at all three intermediate splits, but Burns’ closing finish helped him get to the wall first, 1:36.11 to 1:36.17. Indiana’s Max Reich was victorious in both the 100 breast (54.51) and 200 breast (1:59.73), with teammate Jassen Yep taking second in both events, and Van Mathias also had double victories, with first-place results in the 50 free (19.63) and 100 free (43.60).
Mikey Calvillo posted a 15-second win as part of an Indiana 1-2-3-4 sweep in the 1000 free. Calvillo touched in 9:10.84. Luke Barr cruised in the 100b back in 48.21, and Warren Briggs won the 400 free (4:32.95) as part of another IU 1-2-3-4 finish. Quinn Henninger won 1-meter diving for Indiana (416.63), but Carson Tyler flipped the script and defeated Henninger on 3-meter (415.50).
Barr, Mathias, Finn Brooks and Rafael Miroslaw won the 200 medley relay in 1:25.98, and it was another easy triumph for Miroslaw, Barr, Brooks and Jack Franzman in the 400 free relay (2:56.56).
A huge day for Missouri’s Clement Secci saw him capture three individual wins, and his 200 fly mark of 1:44.12 was just off his SMU Classic time of 1:43.95 that ranks him fourth in the nation behind only Burns, Arizona State’s Leon Marchand and Texas’ Carson Foster. Secci also won the 100 fly (46.48) and 200 IM (1:47.50). Dahlgren was the only other Mizzou winner with his 200 back time of 1:44.67.
