Arkansas senior Anna Hopkin swam the second leg on the Razorbacks’ 200 free relay and split a 20.27 on the second leg at the 2020 SEC Swimming and Diving Championships. That split put her as the fastest woman in history over 50 yards from a relay start, wiping out Stanford’s Simone Manuel and Cal’s Abbey Weitzeil’s identical 20.45’s from the 2018 and 2019 NCAAs respectively.
Hopkin blew those swims out of the water as she nearly broke 20 seconds. She will be swimming the 50 free final later on tonight alongside Tennessee senior Erika Brown, who led off Tennessee’s relay at 21.15. The individual NCAA record in the 50 freestyle is a 20.8 set by Abbey Weitzeil in December 2018. Based on what we have already seen tonight from Brown and Hopkin, that time could be lowered later on tonight.
Hopkin is a native of Preston, England and was a final at the World Championships in the 50 free last summer while representing Great Britain.
