Andrew Wilson, Michael Phelps Headline 200 Breast Prelim At USA Nationals
After sending shock waves through the swimming world with his sub-minute 100-breast, Emory’s Andrew Wilson clocked a 2:09.84 in the 200-meter breast this morning at USA Nationals to land tonight’s top seed. Wilson displayed a mastery of the event, taking the race out in 1:02.11 and returning in 1:07.73.
Wilson: 29.44/32.67/33.65/34.08
Will Licon claimed the second spot with a 2:10.10, followed by BJ Johnson at 2:11.92. Scoland’s Craig Benson (2:12.14) and Michael Jameison (2:12.17) filled the next two spots.
A rather unfamiliar name to the 200 breaststroke ranks took sixth with a 2:12.68. That would be Michael Phelps, who is coming off of three straight world-best swims in the 200-meter fly, 100-meter fly, and 200-meter IM. Phelps dropped nearly three seconds from his seed time to land in tonight’s championship final.
Phelps: 30.17/33.62/34.47/34.42
Samuel Tierney (2:12.71) and Chuck Katis (2:13.11) round out the top eight and will appear in tonight’s championship final.
Swimming in tonight’s consolation final will be Sean Mahoney (2:13.21), Reece Whitley (2:13.42), Brad Craig (2:13.79), Nicholas Schaffer (2:13.86), Tanner Kurz (2:14.15), Andrew Seliskar (2:14.54), Chandler Bray (2:14.55), and Jonathan Rutter (2:14.72).
