Andrew Wilson, Emory, Arthur Conover Open Division III Invites With Three NCAA Records
This weekend many Division III teams are taking part in a number of invitationals. Swimming was expected to be fast and Thursday night’s performances delivered.
Three NCAA Division III National records fell in a matter of on Thursday night. Emory’s Andrew Wilson posted a mark of his own and was key to the success of a relay. Kenyon’s Arthur Conover continued his successful distance campaign taking down the 1650 freestyle mark.
After a breakout season in 2015 Wilson took an Olympic redshirt year and trained at the University of Texas. After finishing fourth at Olympic Trials this summer in the 200 breaststroke and fifth in the 100 breaststroke he’s back on the Division III stage. Emory has an impressive squad at the University of Miami (Ohio) Invitational this weekend.
Last night Wilson raced the defending 200 IM National Champion and NCAA record holder, Jack Lindell of Denison. Wilson clocked a 1:45.47 with a blistering 28.46 breaststroke split to win the event and lower the NCAA Record. Lindell finished second in 1:48.66. His record was a 1:46.00, swum at last season’s National Championship.

Wilson then put together a 50.84 breaststroke split to help Emory to the NCAA mark in the 400 medley relay. The Eagles stopped the clock in 3:13.03. Williams College previously held the mark with a 3:13.49 swum in 2015. He was joined by freshman Sage Ono with a 48.92 backstroke split, fellow senior Christian Baker with a 48.26 on butterfly and sprinter Ollie Smith with a 45.01 freestyle split.

Conover was swimming at the Lords’ own TPSC Invitational. The distance star Conover clocked a 14:56.44, five seconds faster than his own record and lifetime best of 15:01.24. The senior opened the swim in 4:30.79. At the 1000, he turned in 9:03.58. The entire swim was remarkably consistent.
