MAUI, Hawaii, August 27.
USA’s Andrew Seliskar rocketed his way to a World Junior Record in the men’s 200-meter fly as he also shattered his own meet record in the event tonight. Seliskar scorched the finale in 1:55.92, lowering the World Junior Record of 1:55.95 set by Hungary’s Tamas Kenderesi at the Youth Olympic Games last week. That’s not the fastest 18-and-under swim ever, as Michael Phelps has the 17-18 national age group record in the U.S. with a 1:53.93 from 2003, but FINA only just started recognizing World Junior Records this year.
Meanwhile, Selisker also took down his meet record of 1:56.65 from prelims that lowered the 1:57.40 from Kenta Hirai in 2012. His time ranks him 12th in the world this year.
Japan’s Yuya Yajima took second in 1:58.30, while USA’s Corey Okubo earned third in 1:59.23 as the only other sub-2:00 swimmer of the night.
Australia’s Jacob Hansford (2:00.02), New Zealand’s Bradlee Ashby (2:01.53), Australia’s Joachim Bardrum (2:02.37), Canada’s Osvald Nitski (2:02.42) and Japan’s Junya Higuchi (2:02.59) rounded out the rest of the finale.
Australia’s Dominic Richardson won the B final going away in 2:00.65, while Canada’s Nicolaas Dekker placed second in 2:02.08. Japan’s Yuya Sakamoto snared third in 2:03.02.
USA’s Grant Shoults (2:03.26), New Zealand’s Liam Albery (2:03.58), Canada’s Robert Hill (2:03.96), China’s Chen Chaoqi (2:04.92) and Mexico’s Hector Rubalcaba (2:05.30) finished fourth through eighth.
