Ally McHugh earned her third individual title tonight at the 2019 Phillips 66 U.S. National Championships in the women’s 1500 free (16:05.98).
She attributes her success in the pool to her team and the amount of support they provide. Her swims this meet not only build her confidence but excite her heading into the next year of training.
“I didn’t really have any expectations coming into this meet. I wasn’t expecting to do that, but I’m really happy with how the week turned out,” Ally McHugh said. “I just wanted to come in and have a lot of fun with my teammates and just get in and race people and be aggressive and swim things the way I wanted to.”
Kensey McMahon who finished in second (16:09.80) was ahead of McHugh for the first 1000 meters, but McHugh knew she just needed to stick to her strategy.
“I saw her going out really fast. How I swim my races — I kind of build into it and get better as I go. I knew that I just had to stick to my race plan. She had a fantastic race. I’m so happy for her,” Ally McHugh said.
