Alex Athletics Jubilaums Challenge: Kate Ziegler Breaks 800, 1500 Free SCM World Records; Thomas Lurz Wins 800 Free on Day One
ESSEN, Germany, October 12. THE opening day of the Alex Athletics Jubilaums Challenge in Essen, Germany was one for the record books as Kate Ziegler went on a short course meter record world record tear in the 1500 free, and the 800 free en route to the metric mile standard.
Ziegler set the 1500 free record with a time of 15:32.90, while setting the 800 free with a split of 8:09.68. Ziegler was on her own most of the race as Meike Freitag placed second in 16:32.45, while Cathleen Rund placed third in 16:56.34. Meanwhile, Thomas Lurz won a much closer contest in the men's 800 freestyle race. He pulled off the victory with a time of 7:48.19 to defeat Jan Wolfgarten, who touched in 7:50.23 for second place. Armin Gress, who swims with Lurz for SV Wurzburg, took third in 8:08.43.
