Akron Claims Second Straight Mid-American Crown
YPSILANTI – Akron captured the 2015 Mid-American Conference Women’s Swimming & Diving Championship Saturday night at Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti, Mich. The Zips’ repeat as MAC champions winning their second title.
Akron compiled 650 total points throughout the four-day event. Eastern Michigan finished second after collecting 555 points and Bowling Green was third with 507 points. Buffalo (477), Miami (443), Ohio (359.5), Toledo (343.5), & Ball State (170) rounded out the event.
Buffalo’s Jessica Powers started off the evening by reclaiming her title in the 1650 yard Freein a time of 16:27.95. Buffalo’s Spencer Rodriguez placed second in the event with a time of 16:34.78, while Akron’s Ashley Drazkowski placed third in a time of 16:41.53.
Buffalo’s Megan Burns took home the 100 Freestyle title in a time of 49.04.
Ohio’s Laura Dawson claimed the 200 Backstroke Championship title in a pool record time of 1:55.23, as well as the 200 Butterfly in a pool record time of 1:58.13.
Akron’s Munoz Marrero won the 200 Breaststroke title in a pool record time of 2:13.34.
The 3-meter diving title was won by Miami’s Pei Lin with a total of 365.10 points. Eastern Michigan’s Rebecca Deacon took second place (33), while Akron’s Alice Hottensmith placed third (331.55).
Buffalo won the final race of the evening for the second year in a row as the relay team of Spencer Rodriguez, Taylor Steffl, Eve Kosten, and Megan Burns claimed the 400 Free Relay in a pool record time of 3:20.86. Miami finished in second (3:22.46) with Eastern Michigan taking home third (3:23.04).
