After William & Mary Cut, Freestyler Leigh Spicer Gives Verbal to Richmond Spiders
NEW COMMIT: After William & Mary decided to cut the program at the end of this season, former Tribe commit Leigh Spicer of Cohasset, Mass. has pledged her verbal commitment to the University of Richmond for the fall of 2021.
She will join Christina Levins, Laura Davis and Carstyn Klosterman as a member of the Spiders’ class of 2025.
She told Swimming World:
“I chose the University of Richmond for their amazing coaching staff, team and incredible academics. I could not be more excited. While I was so sad to hear that the William and Mary swim team was cut, I am very appreciative of everything the coaching staff and team have done for me. I also wanted to thank everyone who was involved in my recruiting journey. Go Spiders!!”
A talented freestyler, Spicer swims year-round with Kingfish Swimming and most recently finished seventh in the 200 free and ninth in the 400 IM at the New England Age Group Championships. She recorded a pair of top-16 finishes at New England Seniors in December and placed 16th in the 400m free at Genevea Futures last summer.
Her best times include:
- 200 free – 1:53.83
- 500 free – 5:00.51
- 1000 free – 10:12.19
- 1650 free – 17:02.88
- 200 back – 2:06.89
She is also a rising senior at Cohasset High School and has earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors. At the 2020 Massachusetts DII State Championships, she was the 500 free runner-up and took fourth in the 200 free. She was also part of the team record-breaking and gold-medal-winning 4×100 free relay.
Spicer will add valuable distance freestyle depth when she joins the Spiders at the start of the 2021-22 season. She would’ve finished 10th in the mile at the 2020 Atlantic 10 Championships where Richmond placed fourth overall in the team standings.
