Adam Peaty Set For Another Olympic Tilt At Los Angeles 2028 After Addition Of The 50m Breaststroke

Triple Olympic champion Adam Peaty intends to compete at Los Angeles 2028 after the International Olympic Committee approved the addition of the 50m breaststroke to the programme.

The Briton said late last year that he’d likely continue until 2028 should the 50 strokes be included and on Wednesday the IOC announced the addition of the one-length breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke with the 50 free having been on the programme since Seoul 1988.

He told Swimming World that he’d sought out the advice of 23-time Olympic champion Michael Phelps while also being inspired by the men’s 50 free at Paris 2024 where the three oldest men in the field filled the podium.

Peaty will now attempt a tilt at his fourth Olympics following his appearances at Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 from which he’s claimed three gold and three silver medals. In Paris, the eight-time world champion won silver in the 100m breaststroke, 0.02 behind Nicolo Martinenghi, to add to his golds from Rio and Tokyo.

Now trained by Jamie Main at Repton School since long-time coach and mentor Mel Marshall moved to Australia, Peaty will be 33 by the time LA rolls around.

He posted to social media, saying: “50m Sprint Events have just been added to @la28games which confirms my attempt to be at my Fourth Olympic Games. This is the best result for our incredible sport and will allow more people to be part of it and stay in it much longer. Thank you @world_aquatics for this amazing decision.

“I’ve got a good feeling about these next three years 🏆

Kyle Chalmers was among those to respond, the nine-time Olympic medallist saying “Yes!!!! LFG brother 🔥” while David Popovici said: “i’m happy for you😌

Currently the USA has Zero men who could compete in the 50 breast. They are ALL one half to a full second behind people like Adam Peaty. Michael Andrews has not trained for this event. BUT there is one American who has the best start in the world and has done 50 seconds in the 100 scy. Caleb could come close to winning the 50 LCM breast, 50 fly and perhaps the 50 meter free. I would love to train Caleb, no breath on the first stroke up and then no breaths to the wall. here is a 25.0 seconds coming up.
