Olympic champions Tom Daley and Adam Peaty were second and third respectively in the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year award.

Emma Raducanu was crowned the winner after a stunning effort at the US Open where she became the first qualifier to win a Grand Slam tennis tournament in the Open era.

Daley won gold with Matty Lee in the 10m synchro and bronze in the individual platform in Tokyo to take his Olympic haul over three Games to four.

Peaty became the first Briton to retain an Olympic swimming title when he added gold in Tokyo to his maiden crown in Rio five years earlier.

He also won gold in the mixed medley relay and silver in the men’s medley which followed his historic four European titles in Budapest in May for the fourth straight championships as he completed the quadruple quadruple.

Mel Marshall and Jane Figueiredo – who helped Peaty and Daley to Olympic success respectively – were also in the running for Coach of the Year which was won by Gareth Southgate, coach of the England football team.

British Swimming CEO Jack Buckner said through the federation:

“It was fantastic to see so many nominations across the British Swimming disciplines at tonight’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year – I felt unbelievably proud watching the ceremony.

“I’d like to wish a huge congratulations to Tom and Adam for finishing in the top three. They are two incredible ambassadors for diving and swimming respectively, both in and out of the water, and this is great recognition for some awesome Olympic achievements.

“The depth of quality across our disciplines is clear to see by the fact that Ellie (Challis) was nominated for the Young Sports Personality of the Year prize after a memorable Paralympic debut, while the Coach and Team of the Year prizes also featured nods to our amazing athletes and staff. The most exciting thing is that we feel there is even more to come in 2022 and beyond!”
