ACES Swim Club Teammates Ella Drury, Anna Wetzel Both Make Verbal Commitments to Hawaii

NEW COMMITS: Teammates and best friends Ella Drury and Anna Wetzel will continue their bond in college next fall, as both swimmers have announced their verbal commitment to the University of Hawaii beginning in the fall of 2020.

Natives of Centennial, Colo., they both swim year-round with Aces Swim Club. Drury, a breaststroke specialist, and Wetzel, a sprint freestyler, will add valuable depth to Hawaii’s lineup and will join Malia Mills in the class of 2024.

Drury, who owns the Winter Juniors standard in the 200 breast, most recently raced five events at Des Moines Futures this past summer after placing seventh in the 100m breast at Colorado LCM Seniors. She competed in three events at Juniors West last winter before going on to finish fifth in the 100 breast at Phoenix Sectionals in March.

A current senior at Cherry Creek High School, Drury is a five-time Colorado 5A State Championship finalist. She raced to sixth in the 100 breast and 11th in the 200 IM as a junior after taking ninth and 12th, respectively, in those events during her sophomore season.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swim career at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa! I have been so blessed by my family, friends, and coaches that have helped me get to where I am today and I am forever grateful for them! I cannot wait to be a Rainbow Wahine! I am not going alone though!! My best friend @annawetzel_ is coming with me! Go Bows!!!

  • 50 breast – 29.76
  • 100 breast – 1:03.92
  • 200 breast – 2:19.01
  • 200 IM – 2:07.66

Wetzel capped off her summer long course season by racing a trio of events at Des Moines Futures after finishing 10th in the 50m free at Colorado LCM Seniors. At Phoenix Sectionals in March, she recorded three lifetime bests and her highest finish was a seventh-place showing in the 100 breast.

Also competing for Arapahoe Senior High School, Wetzel is a four-time Colorado 5A State Championship finalist. She finished fourth in the 100 breast and ninth in the 50 free during her junior campaign after racing to 13th place in the former event during her sophomore season.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa! A huge mahalo goes out to all my friends, family, and coaches who have helped me get to where I am today. Not only am I going to UH next year, but my best friend is coming with me! @sun_beans Go Bows!!
