ACC Weekly Honors: Record-Setting Gretchen Walsh Recognized

Fresh off a record-setting week in which she set four American and one world record, Gretchen Walsh of Virginia was recognized Tuesday in the ACC Weekly Honors as Swimmer of the Week.

She joins Stanford’s Ron Polonsky on the men’s side. Luke Sitz of SMU is the ACC men’s diver of the week, while Margo O’Meara of Duke is the top female diver.

Walsh had an all-time performance in a win over Florida for the top-ranked Cavaliers. Swum in short-course meter, Walsh set American records in the 100 backstroke (54.89), the 50 freestyle (23.10) and the 200 medley relay (1:44.14). her time of 55.98 in the 100 IM set the world record.

O’Meara won 3-meter diving in a conference dual-meet win for Duke against Virginia Tech. She scored 380.18 points, the senior downing a Taishoff Aquatic Center record that had stood since 2010.

Polonsky started for the Cardinal in a triple distance meet against No. 1 California in Berkeley. The Israeli Olympian swept all three individual medley distances – 49.38 in the 100, 1:47.62 in the 200 and 3:55.53 in the 400 – then helped Stanford win the 200 medley relay, swimming breaststroke.

Sitz is being honored for the second straight week. The freshman won the 1-meter and 3-meter events at the SMU Classic. His score on the latter of 428.03 is the second-highest score in the nation this season.
