ACC Championships, Night Two: NC State Men Piling Up Wins, Arsenio Bustos Sets 200 IM Meet Record
After Tuesday’s opening session at the ACC Championships in Greensboro, N.C., featured diving and two relays for both women and men, the Wednesday finals session began with the 200 freestyle relay and then included the first three individual swimming finals of the meet. In the opening relay, the country’s dominant women’s program set its second American and NCAA record of the meet with Virginia’s team of Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh, Lexi Cuomo and Alex Walsh lowering their own mark, and on the men’s side, NC State continued piling up relay victories.
In the individual races, the Virginia women and NC State men continued their winning ways. Douglass finished in the second-fastest time in history in the 200 IM while her Cavaliers teammate Ella Nelson tied with Georgia Tech’s Deniz Ertan in the 500 free, and on the men’s side, the Wolfpack’s James Plage and Arsenio Bustos claimed wins. Later on, the younger Walsh sister clipped the American record in the 50 free, and Louisville’s Abdelrahman El-Araby was the winner on the men’s side.
The dominance of the Virginia women and NC State men have led both squads to solid leads in the team competition with three days remaining.

Men’s 200 Freestyle Relay
Following a pair of wins in the 200 medley relay and 800 free relay Tuesday evening, the NC State men earned another convincing victory in the 200 free relay. Notre Dame’s Chris Guiliano posted the top leadoff split at 18.95, but the Wolfpack squad was right behind with David Curtiss going out in 18.99, and Noah Henderson quickly took over the lead. Luke Miller extended the margin before Nyls Korstanje finished in 18.55, the fastest split in the field. NC State came in at 1:15.10, moving ahead of Arizona State (1:15.30) for the country’s top time, at least for the moment.
Virginia finished second in 1:15.89 with the team of Matt Brownstead, Jack Aikins, Tim Connery and August Lamb. The Cavaliers set the American record in this event at last season’s ACC Championships (1:14.47), and Brownstead and Lamb both returned from that squad while UVA’s Matt King is absent this week in Greensboro. Lamb anchored in 18.59 to get ahead of Louisville by one hundredth, and the Cardinals team of Abdelrahman El-Araby, Michael Eastman, Dalton Lowe and Vlad Dubinin placed third in 1:15.90.

Women’s 500 Freestyle
At four consecutive splits in the 500 free final, Georgia Tech freshman Deniz Ertan held the lead in her first final at a collegiate championship meet, but Virginia’s Ella Nelson snuck up and retook the lead with 50 yards to go. Nelson, better known for her skills in breaststroke and individual medley races, held tough on the last two lengths, but Ertan bounced back with a 26.90 freestyle split.
The two swimmers came to the wall at the exact same time, and they ended up finishing in a dead-heat, both touching at 4:38.04. Ertan and Nelson are now tied for second in the country behind Texas’ Erica Sullivan.
With the first individual swimming event concluded, the Cavaliers moved into the team lead with Nelson tying for first place and then Maddie Donohoe claiming third in 4:39.59. Another Cavalier, freshman Claire Tuggle, placed fourth in 4:40.41, just ahead of Virginia Tech’s Emma Atkinson (4:40.62).

Men’s 500 Freestyle
Three swimmers went head-to-head-to-head for nearly the entire 20 lengths of this final, and NC State’s James Plage used a furious finish to get the better of Georgia Tech’s Batur Unlu by two hundredths at the finish. Plage, a consolation finalist in this event at last year’s NCAA Championships, took the lead for the first time at the 450-yard mark, flipping one hundredth ahead of Unlu, and he held firm over the final two lengths to earn the win in 4:12.33, just ahead of Unlu’s 4:12.35.
Finishing third was Florida State’s Yordan Yanchev placed third in 4:12.97. Yanchev held the lead for most of the race, but he could not keep pace with Plage and Unlu at the finish. The trio moved to fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively, in the national rankings. Finishing just behind was NC State’s Will Gallant, who collected fourth-place points with his time of 4:13.85.

Men’s 200 IM
NC State sophomore Arsenio Bustos pulled away from defending ACC champion Carles Coll Marti and more decorated Wolfpack teammate Giovanni Izzo to earn his first conference title in the 200 IM, breaking Coll Marti’s 2022 meet record in the process. Bustos was in third place with 50 yards to go, but he finished in 24.58 to pull away from his rivals and score the win in 1:40.31, quicker than Coll Marti’s 1:40.45 from last season. The time also ranks second in the country so far this season behind the insane 1:38.89 that Arizona State’s Leon Marchand posted last month.
Coll Marti finished second in 1:41.02, with Izzo touching just behind in 1:41.13. Those times rank third and fourth, respectively, in the nation.
Men’s 50 Freestyle
The last swimming race of the night was the first not to feature an NC State winner. Instead, it was Louisville’s Abdelrahman El-Araby touching out Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan by three hundredths, 18.79 to 18.82. Those swimmers now rank third and fourth, respectively, in the country, trailing the marks posted by Tennessee’s Jordan Crooks and Florida’s Josh Liendo earlier in the day at the SEC Championships.
Notre Dame’s Chris Guiliano finished third in 18.93, while the top NC State finishers ended up just off the podium: David Curtiss (18.99) and Nyls Korstanje (19.12).
