ACC Championships, Day 5 Prelims: Kate Douglass Tops 100 Freestyle Meet Record

After posting an incredible 100 butterfly split on Virginia’s record-breaking 400 medley relay Friday evening, Kate Douglass returned to individual racing Saturday and lowered the meet record in the 100 freestyle to set herself up for a run at a third individual win in the final. Douglass will be challenged in the final by teammate and defending NCAA champion Gretchen Walsh, and while Douglass skipped the 200 breaststroke after twice lowering the American record so far this season, the Cavaliers’ Alex Walsh and Ella Nelson posted the top two times in that race, with both of those swimmers also aiming for individual title No. 3.

Virginia holds a 286-point lead over NC State in the team competition while Louisville sits in third place, and on the men’s side, NC State leads by a whopping 435.5 points over Louisville, clearly on the way to a eighth team title in the last nine seasons.

Women’s 200 Backstroke

NC State’s women scored a pair of individual wins Friday night with Abby Arens in the 200 butterfly and Katharine Berkoff in the 100 backstroke, and it will be freshman Kennedy Noble in the driver’s seat in the 200 back after she posted a top time of 1:51.39 in prelims. The Wolfpack went 1-2 in the morning with fifth-year swimmer Emma Muzzy taking second in 1:52.19, while Louisville’s Paige Hetrick was third in 1:52.46.

Last season, Muzzy placed seventh in this event at the NCAA Championships, but two ACC swimmers finished even higher and broke 1:50: Virginia’s Reilly Tiltmann and Virginia Tech’s Emma Atkinson. Tiltmann, the defending ACC champion this race, qualified fourth in the morning in 1:52.86, and Atkinson was sixth in 1:53.93.

Men’s 200 Backstroke

Virginia Tech’s Nico Garcia used a strong finishing spurt to post the top overall time of the morning in the men’s 200 back with his mark of 1:40.42, leaving him eight hundredths clear of Virginia’s Jack Aikins. Aikins, the ACC runnerup last year and the U.S. Nationals winner in July in the 200-meter back, took second in 1:40.50, with Notre Dame freshman Tommy Janton finishing third in 1:41.19, just ahead of NC State veteran Hunter Tapp (1:41.36).

Speaking of the Wolfpack, three swimmers qualified for the top heat with Mikey Moore taking sixth (1:42.09) and 100 back winner Kacper Stokowski sneaking into the A-final with his mark of 1:42.13. Stokowski finished just four hundredths ahead of the swimmers who tied for ninth in 1:42.17, Pitt’s Marcin Goraj and Virginia’s Max Edwards.

Women’s 100 Freestyle

Kate Douglass recorded a mark of 46.50 in prelims to crush the field and lower the previous ACC meet record of 46.57 established by Louisville’s Mallory Comerford in 2019. Douglass was just two tenths off her lifetime best in this event, a 46.30 which ties her for eighth all-time. She should get a push in the final from Gretchen Walsh, a Virginia teammate who won this event at the NCAA Championships last year. Walsh ranks fourth all-time at 46.05.

Louisville’s Gabi Albiero took third in 47.42, just ahead of NC State’s Katharine Berkoff (47.50), while Virginia got two other swimmers in the A-final with Lexi Cuomo placing sixth (47.71) and Aimee Canny tying for seventh (48.05). Canny, a freshman who placed second behind Alex Walsh in the 200 free two days earlier, split 46.85 as she anchored Virginia’s 400 medley relay to the fastest time in history Friday evening.

Virginia Tech earned the top seed in back-to-back men’s events, and this time, Youssef Ramadan recorded a 41.69 in the 100 free, a quarter-second ahead of the 200 free winner, Notre Dame’s Chris Guiliano. Ramadan has already posted the nation’s fastest time in the 100 fly and third-fastest time in the 100 back this week.

Guiliano was second in 41.94, followed by Louisville’s Michael Eastman (42.17) and Virginia’s Matt Brownstead (42.21). Once again, NC State went three up, with Luke MillerDavid Curtiss and Noah Henderson all making it into the A-final, only split by Virginia’s Tim Connery in seventh place.

Women’s 200 Breaststroke

Two weeks after she lowered the American record for the third time in less than a year, Kate Douglass skipped the 200 breast to focus on the 100 free, but another Cavalier, Alex Walsh, is the third-fastest performer ever in this event at 2:03.02, and she claimed the top seed in 2:06.31. Walsh already has wins in the 200 free, 100 breast and three relays this week. Just behind Walsh was Ella Nelson, another Cavalier who has two individual wins this week (500 free and 400 IM). Nelson posted a time of 2:06.39, well ahead of a pack of 2:08s led by Duke’s Sarah Foley (2:08.27).

Virginia showed off depth once again with four Cavaliers getting into the A-final, with Anna Keating (2:08.79) and Emma Weber (2:09.62) joining Walsh and Nelson in the final. Duke (Foley and Kaelyn Gridley) and NC State (Andrea Podmanikova and Heather MacCausland) also put two swimmers each into the field.
