ACC Championships, Day 4 Prelims: Virginia Women, Stanford Men Sweep Top Seeds

Friday’s morning session of the ACC Championships settled into a tidy theme.

On the women’s side, the University of Virginia secured the top finals seeds in all three individual events. On the men’s, it was Stanford leading the way in each event.

With two Walsh sisters and three Olympians for the Cavaliers and the Cardinal veteran contingent, it should at least set the stage for some intrigue in the men’s team race, where the Cardinal are looking to bridge a 78-point gap to leading Cal.

Friday’s night session will include the finals of men’s platform diving as well as the men’s and women’s 400 medley relays.

Women’s 200 butterfly

Alex Walsh set the pace in prelims at 1:53.39. The fifth-year’s time was a second off her season-best and well off the NCAA record of 1:49.16 she holds. It was only slightly quicker than teammate Tess Howley, who went 1:53.70.

The top seed entering the meet was Stanford’s Lillie Nordmann. She went 1:54.23 for third. UVA and Stanford have three each in the A final, with Caroline Bricker fourth for Stanford and Katie Grimes sixth for Virginia. Virginia adds two in the B final.

Men’s 200 butterfly

Top seed Andrei Minakov defended that status for Stanford, going 1:40.73. With a seed time of 1:40.01, he’ll have an eye on breaking that 1:40 mark in finals. His best is 1:38.61.

Florida State’s Logan Robinson is the second seed in 1:41.31, .31 up on Landon Gentry of Virginia Tech. Stanford has two in the A final, but so does Cal, with Gabriel Jett fourth and Dare Rose fifth. In the oddity of the event, UNC monopolized spots seven through 11 inclusive.

Men’s 100 backstroke

Stanford senior Aaron Sequeira was the pace-setter in what promises to be a chaotic final. He went 45.06, his fastest time this season by a half second. Just .53 seconds separate the top eight times.

NC State went 2-3 with Quintin McCarty (45.08) and Hudson Williams (45.21). Mason Herbet and Michel Arkhangelskiy give Florida State two A finalists, though not their quickest swimmer entering the meet, Max Wilson, who was 10th.

In an all-around bizarre event, 14 swimmers entered with 45-point seed times. Five made the A final, five are in the B final, and four are in the C final. The B final includes Destin Lasco in 11th and Jack Aikins in 13th. The C final features the top overall seed entering the meet, Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan, whose 46.28 landed him 19th. Also in there is Bjorn Seeliger.
