ACC Championships, Day 3: Torri Huske Clocks 48.52 100 Fly; Katie Grimes Adds Medley Win
The first swimmer to win two individual events at the ACC Championships is Katie Grimes, a freshman who joined the University of Virginia program at midseason. After winning the 500 freestyle Wednesday evening, Grimes added a triumph in the 400 IM Thursday. Following that, a trio of U.S. Olympians faced off in the 100 butterfly with Stanford’s Torri Huske facing Virginia’s Claire Curzan and Alex Walsh.
The session also included the men’s 400 IM and 100 fly, the 200 freestyle for both genders and women’s 3-meter diving. The meet continues through Saturday. By the end of the session, Virginia’s women had opened up a 60.5-point lead over Stanford, with Louisville sitting in third, while the Cal men were 38.5 points clear of the Cardinal while North Carolina held down third place.

Women’s 400 IM
Katie Grimes was unstoppable in the women’s 400 IM final. The Olympic silver medalist in the meters version of the event already clocked the country’s fastest time in the event during her two-month college career, touching in 3:59.02 in late January, and she backed that up with a conference win Thursday. A slim lead over Stanford’s Caroline Bricker after butterfly turned into a lead of more than three seconds at the halfway point. The field came back to Grimes on the breaststroke, but her elite freestyle meant no one would catch her.
Grimes finished in 3:59.69, two-thirds of a second shy of her season-best time. Grimes owns a lifetime best of 3:57.02, making her the 6th-fastest performer ever in the event. Bricker placed second in 4:01.40, and her Stanford teammate Lucy Bell was third in 4:01.70. Bricker is one of only three swimmers, along with Grimes and Florida’s Emma Weyant, to break 4:00 this season. Bricker swam a top time of 3:59.88 from the Texas Invitational in November. Leah Hayes, another Virginia freshman who surged through the field on breaststroke, took fourth in 4:02.23.

Men’s 400 IM
NC State’s Kyle Ponsler pulled ahead of the field on the backstroke leg, but he could not hold up as Louisville’s Tommy Bried took control of the race on breaststroke before holding tough on freestyle. Bried, the fifth-place finisher in the 400-meter IM at the U.S. Olympic Trials and a semifinalist in both the 200 fly and 200 breast, pulled into the finish in 3:39.28, identical to his prelims time but three seconds quicker than his season best entering the meet.
Ponsler grabbed second in 3:40.05. Bried and Ponsler actually had a very similar race in the Olympic Trials final of the meters version of the event, with Bried passing Ponsler on breaststroke before finishing one spot ahead. Third went to North Carolina’s Ben Delmar in 3:40.61, just ahead of Pitt’s Max Matteazzi (3:40.89). Louisville also got fifth-place points from Gregg Enoch (3:41.57).

Women’s 100 Butterfly
Stanford’s Torri Huske was not forced to contend with American and NCAA-record holder Gretchen Walsh in the 100 fly final, but she still had two Olympians representing the University of Virginia standing in her way of a conference crown. But Huske pulled away from Claire Curzan while Alex Walsh was never in contention Thursday evening, and Huske knocked four tenths off her best time on the way to a win.
Huske finished in 48.52, taking down her previous best time of 48.96 from the 2023 NCAA Championships. Huske remains the fourth-fastest performer ever in the event behind Gretchen Walsh, Kate Douglass and Maggie Mac Neil, and she remains No. 2 in the national rankings behind Gretchen Walsh.
Curzan, meanwhile, knocked almost a half-second off her third-ranked season-best time to place second in 49.02. That improved upon her career-best mark of 49.24, although she remained No. 5 in the all-time standings in the event. Notably, Curzan’s previous time briefly stood as the American record when she swam it in February 2022. Alex Walsh placed third in 50.00, narrowly missing becoming the 14th member of the sub-50 club, while NC State freshman Leah Shackley grabbed fourth (50.33).

A rush of 44-second swims in the men’s 100 fly final left 2023 NCAA champion Youssef Ramadan of Virginia Tech in fifth place while NC State’s Luke Miller, third at last year’s national meet, fell all the way to sixth. Coming out on top was Stanford’s Andrei Minakov, the national champion in the event back in 2022.
Minakov was slightly behind Virginia Tech’s Mario Molla Yanes and Florida State’s Michel Arkhangelskiy at the halfway point, but he closed in 23.84 to secure the win in 44.27. Minakov moved to No. 6 in the country in the event. Arkhangelskiy placed second in 44.36 while Dare Rose, the bronz medalist in the 100-meter fly at the 2023 World Championships, had the quickest back half (23.77) to secure third in 44.55. Molla Yanes was fourth in 44.63, ahead of Ramadan (44.83) and Miller (44.87).

None of Virginia’s quartet of Olympic medalist (Gretchen Walsh, Alex Walsh, Katie Grimes and Claire Curzan) swam in the 200 free final, but Aimee Canny took care of business to earn the Cavaliers their fourth individual event victory of the meet. Canny overcame an early challenge from Stanford’s Aurora Roghair and pulled away down the stretch to record a time of 1:42.00, good for No. 6 in the national rankings. It’s worth noting, however, that the swimmers in front of her in the standings include Gretchen Walsh, Torri Huske and Curzan, none of whom are likely to contest the event at the NCAA Championships.
Lea Polonsky, who already took third in the 200 IM in Greensboro, secured second place in 1:42.98. Third went to Virginia’s Anna Moesch, who came home in 25.83 to move from sixth place into a podium spot at 1:43.15. Roghair, who was in second until the last two lengths, fell to fourth (1:43.48).

Stanford’s Henry McFadden earned his first ACC title with a comeback win in the 200 free. Louisville’s Guy Brooks had the lead nearly the entire race, leading by four tenths at the halfway point and holding onto a narrow advantage with 50 yards remaining, but McFadden had the most left in reserve down the stretch, splitting more than eight tenths quicker than Brooks to come into the wall in 1:31.30, good for No. 6 nationally.
The North Carolina Tar Heels earned their first top-three finish in a swimming event as Patrick Hussey finished strong to take second in 1:31.68, and there was a tie for third, with Cal’s Lucas Henveaux coming back to tie Brooks in 1:32.04.
