ACC Championships, Day 3 Finals: Ella Nelson, Youssef Ramadan, Alex Walsh Hit No. 1 National Marks
The University of Virginia women continue to put on a show at the ACC Championships in Greensboro, N.C., with Cavaliers swimmers having finished first in every event so far (including one tie). Kate Douglass produced the fastest time in history in the women’s 100 butterfly final while teammates Ella Nelson and Alex Walsh were both victorious in individual events, both hitting the fastest time in the country in their swims, as the Cavaliers continued to extend their overall lead.
On the men’s side, NC State holds a significant lead in the team competition, but the top men’s swim of the night came from Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan, who became the first swimmer so far this season to crack 44 seconds in the 100 fly. It was also a big night for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish as Jack Hoagland and Chris Guiliano each recorded individual wins. In the team competition, NC State did not win any events Thursday, but the Wolfpack own a commanding lead in points, with an advantage of almost 400 over second-place Louisville.

Women’s 400 IM
Ella Nelson, now a senior at the University of Virginia, has played a key role in a pair of back-to-back national-championship performances for the Cavaliers. She was the national runnerup in the 400 IM and 200 breaststroke in 2021 before finishing third in the 400 IM and fourth in the 200 breast last season. Already established on the national level in women’s college swimming, Nelson produced a breakthrough performance Thursday evening as she swam a best time by almost three seconds in a dominant victory.
Nelson trailed Louisville’s Abby Hay by over a second at the halfway point, but she took over the lead on breaststroke and never looked back. Nelson produced a time of 3:59.33, destroying her previous ACC meet record and lifetime best of 4:02.11, and she became the 11th-fastest performer in history in the event. Alex Walsh, a teammate of Nelson’s at Virginia, is the only other active college swimmer to break 4:00 in her career.
NC State’s Grace Sheble also closed well as she finished second in 4:04.98, while Hay claimed third in 4:05.23. Those swimmers rank fifth and sixth nationally, respectively. Duke’s Sarah Foley placed fourth in 4:06.25.

Men’s 400 IM
Just like in the women’s version of the 400 IM, the winner took command of the race in breaststroke, but Notre Dame senior Jack Hoagland had to hold off a surging field in freestyle. Hoagland swam a time of 3:41.15 as he held off Virginia Tech’s Nico Garcia and charging NC State swimmer Owen Lloyd at the finish. Hoagland moved into the national top-10 with his performance while Garcia placed second in 3:41.63 and Lloyd took third in 3:42.16. The second and third-place finishers just missed out on the top-10 in the country.
Virginia Tech went 2-4 in the event as Keith Myburgh took fourth in 3:42.46, while NC State’s Kyle Ponsler, the leader for the first half of the race, ended up fifth in 3:42.72.

Men’s 100 Butterfly
No one could keep pace with Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan in the 100 fly final as he repeated as ACC champion. Ramadan opened up a significant lead by the halfway point with a 20.08 split, and an impressive trio of NC State swimmers could not get any closer down the stretch. Ramadan touched in 43.93, just off his conference record of 43.90 set in a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships last year. His time is the fastest in the country this season, beating the 44.04 that Jordan Crooks recorded in the 100 fly prelims at the SEC Championships, although Crooks is likely to swim even quicker in the final.
Aiden Hayes of the Wolfpack placed second in 44.66, just ahead of teammate Nyls Korstanje at 44.70. Those two swimmers rank fourth and fifth in the nation, respectively, behind Ramadan, Crooks and Florida’s Josh Liendo. Kacper Stokowski, better known for his backstroke abilities but strong in the 100 fly as well, finished fourth in 45.12 to help NC State continue wracking up points in the pursuit of a team title.

Women’s 200 Freestyle
Alex Walsh had to wait until the last women’s race of the meet’s third day to swim in an individual final. She is the defending national champion in both individual medley events, but she skipped those to focus on the 200 freestyle, and she recorded the country’s top time in a wire-to-wire win. Aimee Canny, a new addition to the Virginia roster hailing from South Africa, stayed close to Walsh for the first 100 yards of the event, but Walsh showed her endurance in pulling away to a time of 1:41.63.
That time crushed the previous national best of 1:42.78 set last month by Texas’ Kelly Pash, and it would have ranked third at last season’s national meet. Walsh beat her winning time from last year’s conference meet (1:42.28), and she came up just short of Mallory Comerford’s ACC meet record of 1:41.60.
Canny finished second in 1:42.62, moving ahead of Pash for No. 2 in the country behind Walsh, while Virginia Tech’s Emma Atkinson placed third in 1:43.31, which will rank her sixth in the country. Also breaking 1:44 was NC State’s Abbey Webb, who notched a mark of 1:43.84 for fourth place overall.

Georgia Tech’s Batur Unlu held the lead for most of the race, but a huge finish by Notre Dame’s Chris Guiliano helped him finish a mere four hundredths clear of the field for his first conference title and the second of the evening for the squad led by first-year head coach Chris Lindauer. Guiliano finished in 1:32.43, while Unlu and NC State’s Bartosz Piszczorowicz tied for second in 1:32.47. Guiliano moved into ninth place in the national rankings in the event while Unlu and Piszczorowicz are tied for 11th.
Luke Miller, the reigning ACC champion in the event, finished fourth in 1:32.89, but the NC State junior has already recorded a 1:31.87 this season for the second-quickest time in the country.
