ACC Championships, Day 2 Finals: NC State Men Record Another American Record in 200 Free Relay

For the second time in two men’s 200-yard relays in two nights, NC State has recorded the quickest time ever using only U.S. swimmers. The Wolfpack team of Quintin McCartyDrew SallsNoah Henderson and Luke Miller teamed up to take down the American mark in the 200 free relay Wednesday evening at the ACC Championships, overcoming early challenges by Notre Dame, Virginia and Virginia Tech to claim a comfortable relay win.

On the opening leg, Notre Dame’s Chris Guiliano, fresh off a sizzling time of 18.57 in the 50 free prelims, led off in 18.63 to take a slim lead on Virginia’s Matt Brownstead (18.74), Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan (18.90) and McCarty (18.93). By the halfway point, the teams were all within a quarter-second off each other, but Salls had the quickest split at 18.54.

But no one could match the Wolfpack’s depth, and Henderson began to pull away with his 18.45 on the third leg, leaving it up to Miller to finish the job, which he did in 18.53. That was sufficient for a final time of 1:14.44, which broke the American record set by Virginia’s Brownstead, Matt KingConnor Boyle and August Lamb at the conference meet two years ago.

NC State’s men also tied the ACC record, a mark set by Henderson, Nyls Korstanje, Miller and David Curtiss in a third-place finish at last year’s NCAA Championships.

Virginia ended up second here with Brownstead, Boyle, Simon Lins and Lamb combining for a mark of 1:15.20, with Lamb finishing in 18.52 to move the Cavaliers from fourth to second. The Hokies’ team of Ramadan, Brendan WhitfieldCarles Coll Marti and Mario Molla Yanes claimed third in 1:15.47, just ahead of the Fighting Irish (1:15.59) and Florida State (1:15.81).

NC State’s relay prowess combined with depth and Arsenio Bustos’ win in the 200 IM gave the Wolfpack a massive lead of 196 points, but the surprise so far is Notre Dame sitting in second place ahead of Louisville.

Men’s 500 Freestyle

For the first 450 yards of the men’s 500 freestyle final, an NC State victory seemed assured. In fact, Wolfpack swimmers were holding down the first, second and third positions for most of the race, with Ross Dant leading teammates Kyle Ponsler and James Plage. But crazy things can happen down the stretch of a distance race, and Louisville’s Ilia Sibirtsev, who was in fifth place for much of the race and then fourth place coming toward the end, put on one lat monster surge.

With two lengths remaining, Dant was fading but still two tenths ahead of Plage, with Ponsler and Sibirtsev just behind. But Sibirtsev, the top qualifier out of prelims, had a 24.63 closing split left to unleaseh, and theat helped him pull ahead and earn the win in 4:14.41, three tenths clear of the field.

NC State occupied the next four spots, but it was Plage who also closed well to take second in 4:14.72, while Kenneth Lloyd came up for third in 4:14.87, ahead of Dant (4:15.05) and Ponsler (4:15.11), with Georgia Tech’s Batur Unlu not far away (4:15.42).

Men’s 200 IM

NC State junior Arsenio Bustos captured his second consecutive ACC crown in the 200 IM in wire-to-wire fashion, opening up a lead of more than a half-second after butterfly and then extending it on backstroke before holding Virginia Tech’s Carles Coll Marti at bay on the breaststroke. The field closed in down the stretch, but Bustos hung on to finish in 1:40.75, less than a half-second off his meet record of 1:40.31 set last season.

That time ranks Bustos fourth in the nation, trailing only the Arizona State duo of Leon Marchand and Hubert Kos plus Cal’s Destin Lasco, the American-record holder in the event. Bustos took sixth in the final at last year’s NCAA Championships.

Thanks to his brilliant breaststroke split, no surprise for a swimmer who placed ninth in the 200-meter breast at last week’s World Championships, Coll Marti took second in 1:41.51, just holding off a late surge from Virginia’s Tim Connery (1:41.86). Also finishing hard was NC State’s Daniel Diehl, with the midseason enrollee clocking 1:41.97 for fourth in his first individual conference final.

Men’s 50 Freestyle

Chris Guiliano has come a long way in his career since his last ACC title one year ago. At the 2023 conference meet, Guiliano won the 200 free while placing third in both the 50 and 100 free. Since then, Guiliano has broken out internationally, placing second in the 100-meter free at U.S. Nationals and qualifying to represent his country at the World Championships, where he won two relay medals.

Now a junior, Guiliano has become the leading man in the sprints in the ACC, and he showed that with a 50 free win to conclude the racing for Wednesday. Guiliano, who swam a time of 18.57 in prelims to break the meet record owned by U.S. Olympian Ryan Held, finished in 18.70 to hold off Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan by 14-hundredths. Guiliano’s prelims time is one that only Tennessee’s Jordan Crooks has beaten so far this season (pending finals at the SEC Championships later in the night).

Ramadan was second in 18.84, just ahead of Virginia’s Matt Brownstead (18.86), Guiliano’s Notre Dame teammate Abdelrahman Elaraby (18.89) and NC State’s Quintin McCarty (18.89).
