Abbey Weitzeil Blitzes 100-Yard Free Prelims With 3rd-Fastest Time Ever
Canyons’ Abbey Weitzeil has certainly had herself a nice meet at the 2016 American Short Course Championships in Austin.
A day after crushing the 50-yard free American record, she put herself in position to capture the 100-yard free record as well.
This morning, Weitzeil went out two tenths under Simone Manuel’s American-record pace before struggling a bit in the final 10 yards en route to a 46.47.
Regardless, that is still the third-fastest time ever, behind only Manuel’s American record of 46.09 from the 2015 NCAA Championships and Weitzeil’s personal best of 46.29 from the 2014 Speedo Winter Junior Nationals.
Weitzeil broke the pool record of 46.82 set by Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace while swimming for Auburn during the 2011 NCAA Championships.
Weitzeil is on fire this weekend in Austin. She already moved to sixth in the world in the 50-meter free with a 24.72 and seventh in the world in the 100-meter free with a 54.00 during the LCM portion of the meet.
