NEW COMMIT: High school junior Gabi Albiero has given her verbal pledge for the fall of 2020 to the University of Louisville where her father, Arthur Albiero, is the head coach of the program. Her brothers Estefan Albiero was a former swimmer for the Cardinals and Nicolas Albiero is currently a sophomore on the team.

The Louisville, Ky. native swims year-round with Cardinal Aquatics where her mother, Amy Albiero, is the head coach. Albiero is a National-level qualifier in every single stroke and won the 100 fly at Juniors East last winter in addition to anchoring the meet record-setting 4×50 medley relay. She was a four-time finalist at TYR Pro Swim Series Columbus this summer and achieved four personal bests at Nationals.

Also representing Christian Academy of Louisville, Albiero is a four-time Kentucky State champion. As an eighth grader, she won the 50 free in state record-setting fashion and finished fourth in the 100 fly. She won the 50 free and 100 fly as a sophomore after placing first and second, respectively, in those events during her rookie campaign. She lowered her own 50 free State record again last season and has also earned USA Scholastic All-American honors.

She told Swimming World:

“So excited to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Louisville! Couldn’t imagine being apart of any other team!! Thank you to all my coaches, teammates, friends, and family who have supported me along every step of the way! Can’t wait to be a Louisville Cardinal! #L1C4”

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 22.64
  • 100 free – 49.91
  • 200 free – 1:49.82
  • 100 fly – 52.59
  • 200 fly – 1:57.72
  • 100 breast – 1:01.73
  • 100 back – 55.33
  • 200 IM – 2:02.66

Albiero will make an immediate impact when she suits up for the Cardinals at the start of the 2020-21 season. Even with two years left before arriving at Louisville, she would’ve scored in the A-final of both fly events as well as the B-final of the 50 free and 100 breast at the 2018 ACC Championships.
