400 Medley Relay Silver Highlights Swimming Canada’s Run at 2019 Pan American Games
Danielle Hanus and Alexia Zevnik each collected a fourth medal at the Pan Am Games on Saturday as they helped Swimming Canada win the silver in the women’s 4X100-m medley relay.
Bailey Andison of Smith Falls, Ont., added a bronze in the women’s 200-m individual medley. The Canadian swim team ends the Games with 15 medals (one gold, eight silver and six bronze).
In the women’s medley relay, the U.S. won the gold medal in three minutes and 57.64 seconds followed by the Canadians with Hanus and Faith Knelson, both from Swimming Canada’s High Performance Centre-Victoria, Haley Black of HPC-Vancouver and Zevnik of Ottawa, in 4:01.90. Brazil was third in 4:04.96.
“We’re all really stoked with it,’’ said Knelson. “We were definitely trying to go for gold but the American girls had a really good swim. We’re really happy to finish the week with a medal. It was a total team effort.’’
Qualifying Swimming Canada for the final in prelims were Mackenzie Glover of Winnipeg, Mary-Sophie Harvey of Trois-Rivieres, Que., Katerine Savard of Pont-Rouge, Que., and Alyson Ackman of Pointe-Claire, Que.
In the women’s 200 IM, the Americans were 1-2 with Alexandra Walsh first in 2:11.24 and Meghan Small second in 2:11.36. Andison took third spot in 2:14.14. Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson of Ottawa was sixth in 2:15.52.
“The time is really not indicative of what I’m capable of,’’ said Andison, who has battled an illness this week. “It was tough. I’m really happy with the medal but I know I can go a lot faster.’’
Javier Acevedo of Ajax, Ont., was seventh in the men’s 200 IM in 2:04.23.
“I want to congratulate all our swimmers for a fabulous week,’’ said Iain McDonald, the team leader for the Swimming Canada. “We were in 32 finals and to convert nearly half of those into medals is a really great rate at this level of competition.
“It speaks to the depth we’ve been able to create in our overall senior program. The ability to me here with our next wave of swimmers and perform that well, we really see all the effort that’s gone on in developing our whole senior program over the past five-six years is paying off.’’
