33 Thoughts You Have While Swimming Alone
By Chandler Brandes, Swimming World College Intern
It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Exams are done, you’re finally home, and you get to spend quality time with family and friends. What could go wrong?
Everything’s perfect…and then you remember that you still have to swim.
College swimmers are still expected to train over break. Training trip is soon approaching and Championships are just around the corner, so coaches still expect us to remain in shape.
If you don’t train with your former club or high school team, you have to head to your local pool to swim on your own. It’s hard swimming without your team, and swimming alone is never fun.
Here are 33 thoughts you have while swimming alone:
-
Okay, I have to get in the pool now.
-
*stares at workout for 10 minutes*
-
How much yardage can I cut out without feeling too guilty?
-
Maybe I’ll just skip one repeat.
-
No, I shouldn’t skip anything.
-
*skips an entire round*
-
I shouldn’t have skipped; I feel bad.
-
No regrets.
-
*skips another set*
-
I’ll make it up at the end.
-
Who am I kidding, no I won’t.
-
I’ve only been in here for 30 minutes?!
-
Wow, I really miss my team.
-
I can definitely use fins for this set.
-
Coach would probably want me to pull this.
-
I feel awful.
-
I’m going to die during training trip.
-
Swimming wasn’t this hard last year.
-
I don’t think Coach actually wanted me to do 10×100 on 1:05.
-
*races the old man in the next lane*
-
*feels accomplished for beating him*
-
I wonder if I’ll still be swimming when I’m 80 years old.
-
It’ll be a miracle if I even make it through training trip alive.
-
Do people really swim…for fun?
-
Walk away from this lane, I’m not going to share with you.
-
I’m going to do one lap of fast butterfly to show everyone I’m a real swimmer.
-
I wonder if people think I’m an Olympian.
-
Sorry, still not going to share my lane.
-
I think Coach meant to add 20 seconds to this interval.
-
*adds 30 seconds to everything*
-
There’s a million other things I’d rather be doing right now.
-
Like eating. Or sleeping.
-
Alright, 3000 yards is enough for today.

I died with number 26. I’m actually swimming in a local swimming pool. It’s not Olympic so I have to make hundreds of turns. I can’t even buterfly so I go mostly in breaststroke, and still people admire me and want me to teach them.
