Men’s 200 Backstroke

Colorado Mesa’s Benjamin Samson worked his middle 100 yards to ease away from the back, his time of 1:41.54 getting him a second gold of the meet. The sophomore Sampson was .98 seconds better on the middle two 50s than runner-up Santiago Corredor of Tampa. It was the matchup of the IM champs, Sampson having taken the 200 and Corredor the 400. Corredor went 1:42.09.

They were all chasing Drury’s Nathan Bighetti for the first 150 meters. He covered the first three 50s 1.03 seconds quicker than Samson and 1.79 quicker than Corredor. But he only came back in 27.18 while both the others were 25-low, the senior fading to third in 1:42.25.

If you’re looking for the difference in the men’s meet, look no further than the diving boards at the IUPUI Natatorium, with which the UIndy divers will be well-acquainted.

The Greyhounds capped their title by going 1-2-3 on 1-meter, Julio Osuna Kelly grabbing his second title of the weekend on 1-meter. He scored 599.50 to boss the field, buzzing within 20 points of a record that has held since 1994 in the hands of Oakland’s Dario DiFazio (618.70).

Second was Jason Lenzo, who was also the runner-up on 3-meter, in 524.75. Cade Hammond rose from sixth on 3-meter to bronze.

Cole Earle for Drury was fifth for a second time. He accounted for all 28 of Drury’s diving points, but Indy tallied 103. That’s a difference of 75 points. The final margin between the teams at meet’s end? 76.5.
