Women’s 1000 Freestyle
The first individual final of the meet was a dominating performance for Nova Southeastern sophomore Emily Trieschmann. Ahead of the field by almost one second after just 50 yards and almost two seconds after her first 100, Trieschmann pulled away to win by more than 10 seconds. She touched in 9:43.25, and in the process, she knocked almost a half-second off her own Division II national record of 9:43.69 set last month.
Wayne State’s Jordan Fox placed second in 9:53.61, dropping more than seven seconds from her entry time, while Wingate’s Kaitlyn Agger held off a late charge from Wayne State’s Allison Vassilakos to take third. Agger touched in 9:55.83, 0.16 ahead of Vassilakos’ 9:55.99.

Men’s 1000 Freestyle
In a much tighter race than the women’s 40-lapper, Indy’s Cedric Buessing had the most energy left over the final 100 yards to pull away from his competition and secure the national title in 8:55.88. Early on, Buessing received challenges from Tampa’s Hayden Curley and Grand Valley’s Eric Hieber, and Buessing and Curley made the break from Hieber around the halfway point, Oklahoma Christian’s Victor Rosado got back into the mix with the remaining leaders.
The three men were within two tenths of each other with 200 yards remaining, but that’s when Buessing found his next gear to take off for the win. Rosado, who actually negative split the race, took second in 8:56.94, and Curley finished in 8:58.22 for third. Hieber was fourth in 9:00.47.

For the second consecutive women’s race, it was a Nova Southeastern underclassman earning the win as Emilia Ronningdal pulled away on breastststroke and freestyle to secure the title. Ronningdal, who was part of Nova’s winning 800 free relay Tuesday night, finished in 1:57.78, which was 1.62 seconds clear of runnerup Aurora Duncan of Drury. Duncan was the only other swimmer to break 2:00 as she finished in 1:59.42 while Savanna Best made it a 1-3 finish for Nova as she touched in 2:00.59 for third.

Men’s 200 IM
Colorado Mesa’s Benjamin Sampson had to work hard to hold on to the 200 IM crown, but he did enough to fend off some hard-charging opponents and win by seven tenths. Sampson, who entered the meet with a seed time of 1:43.76, was well out ahead of the field on the front half, but Florida Southern’s Matteo Zampese closed the gap on breastastroke. On freestyle, Tampa’s Santiago Corredor closed in an absurd 24.35 split, which was enough to deny Drury’s Andrew Rodriguez a spot in the top three, but Sampson and Zampese were far enough ahead. Sampson won in 1:44.33, followed by Zampese’s 1:45.06 and Corredor’s 1:45.48. Rodriguez ended up five hundredths back in 1:45.53.

The second Division II record of the day fell in an enormous 50 free victory for Indy’s Johanna Buys. She won the race by more than a half-second, and her time of 22.10 beat the previous mark of 22.15 set by Queens’ Danielle Melilli last season. Queens has been the dominant team in Division II swimming but is in the process of moving to Division I.
The battle for second was much tighter, with Augustana’s Bryn Greenwaldt finishing in 22.56 to edge out Lynn’s Laura Dekoninck (22.60) and Henderson State’s Kiara Pozvai (22.70).

Nova Southeastern’s event winning streak to begin the meet was snapped when Johanna Buys took the 50 free, but Nova was back on top in an incredible 200 medley relay race. Nova led by more than a second at the halfway point before when Buys split 23.88 on the butterfly leg of Indy’s relay to leave her team nine tenths off the pace. But Indy was not done yet, not with Leticia Vaselli anchoring. Nova had Emily Trieschmann, already the winner and national-record-setter in the 500 free, racing, and she did enough to hold on for the win.
Nova’s Mollie Morfelt, Savanna Best, Aleksandra Maslova and Trieschmann won in 1:39.90, just two tenths ahead of Julia Magierowska, Celina Schmidt, Buys and Vaselli (1:40.11). Colorado Mesa’s Lauren White, Lilly Borgenheimer, Kiara Borchardt and uby Bottai placed third in 1:41.54.
