2023 Division III Championships: Emory Men Take Relay Record, Day 1 Lead
The Emory men’s team are chasing a second straight NCAA Division III swimming and diving championship. After day 1 of the meet at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, the Eagles are laying the groundwork for a repeat.
Emory capped a first day in the lead by setting the NCAA record in the men’s 200 medley relay Wednesday night. Emory’s women’s team also won the relay that concluded the first night session, but the Eagles are tied with Kenyon for second, trailing front-running Denison.
The recap from the first night.

Women’s 500 freestyle
Denison’s Taryn Wisner, the 2022 champ, was the fastest seed in the morning, but Kristin Cornish of Johns Hopkins spoiled the repeat bid. The sophomore went 4:48.38 to best her classmate Wisner, second in 4:49.84. Cornish was slightly quicker than the 4:48.55 Wisner used last year to win.
Cornish was second in that race and later bested Wisner in the mile a season ago.
Denison profited on the points side. Tara Witkowski finished third for the second straight season, and freshman Emily Harris was fifth. NYU’s Caitlyn Marshall finished fourth.

Women’s 200 individual medley
With Kenyon legend Crile Hart having graduated, opportunities are opened anew in events like the 200 IM, which had seniors finish in the top three spots and five of the top six last year. The new blood filling that void is the only underclassmen to have been in the top six last year, Williams’ Sophia Verkleeren.
From fourth, the sophomore rose to the top step of the podium. She was the only swimmer to break two minutes in 1:59.47.
Hope College’s Greta Gidley finished second, with Lily Klinginsmith of Tufts third. Those youngsters bumped a pair of medalists from last year down – Jordyn Wentzel of St. Kate’s went from second to fourth, while Claremont Mudd Scripps’s Augusta Lewis was fifth Wednesday after earning bronze last year.

When I see teams listed in order of rank, my eye always prefers to see the left column run in order from top to bottom, then carry back to the top of the right hand column. Every time you list them right-left-right-left, I have to constantly reorient myself. It makes it worse when Emory is shown as “2” right below Denison in “1”, with Kenyon in ‘actual 2″ to the right. It sounds confusing just writing this. I’m sure that is just a typo, and Emory is intended to be “3”.
I also like to mentally add men+women to see who is ahead in combined score. Maybe that is not official protocol. Maybe that’s why it is shown on a separate list. I can’t help it, I’m just wired to want to know.
Congratulations Bates and especially my awesome nephew Nathaniel Berry!!)
