2023 Big Ten Men’s Championships, Night 4: Brendan Burns Swims Country’s Fastest 200 Back and 200 Fly; Indiana Wins Title
During the final night of the Big Ten Men’s Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., Indiana pulled away from Ohio State to clinch the conference title. Indiana entered the day leading by 106 points before Ohio State’s Charlie Clark opened the session with a win in the 1650 freestyle as part of a 1-6-8-9 finish for his team, but Indiana fired back in the next event as Brendan Burns popped the country’s fastest time thus far in the 200 backstroke.
While Ohio State earned a second individual win in the 100 freestyle (Ruslan Gaziev), Indiana then went 2-3-4-5 in the 200 breaststroke behind champion Max McHugh of Minnesota before Burns returned in the 200 butterfly and swam the fastest time in the country in that event as well. The senior’s monster performance helped put Indiana up by more than 300 points in the standings and secure the team title, with Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota rounding out the top five.

Men’s 1650 Freestyle
Ohio State’s Charlie Clark hit his season-best time in the 1650 free by more than five seconds as he dominated the 66-lap event. Clark, who made his international debut representing the United States at the FINA World Championships last summer, pulled away from Minnesota’s Bar Soloveychik, the eventual runnerup, to win the race in 14:41.75, good for the seventh-fastest time in the country (with the event still to be contested at the Big 12 and Pac-12 Championships). Clark was eighth in this event at last year’s NCAA Championships, with a sub-14:40 swim required to make the top-10.
Soloveyvich placed second in 14:50.93, while Indiana’s Warren Briggs took third in 14:56.97. Minnesota’s Chris Nagy was the only other swimmer to break 15:00, as he placed fourth in 14:57.63, while in the team race, Ohio State cut Indiana’s lead from 106 points entering the night to just 65, thanks to Clark and swims by Alex Metzler (sixth), Mason Edmund (eighth) and Sam Campbell (ninth).

Men’s 200 Backstroke
Indiana senior Brendan Burns is attempting the grueling 200 back-200 fly double on the final night in Ann Arbor, and he began the double with a bang as he recorded the nation’s quickest swim so far in the 200 back. In a wire-to-wire win, Burns pulled away from the field on the third 50 before finishing in 1:38.22. That eclipsed the top time in the country, a mark previously held by Cal’s Destin Lasco set at the Golden Bears’ dual meet against Stanford last week, by one hundredth. In the process, Burns broke the meet record of 1:38.89 established by the Hoosiers’ Eric Ress nine years ago.
Wisconsin’s Jake Newmark finished second in 1:40.02, while Michigan’s Wyatt Davis grabbed third in 1:40.67. Wisconsin’s Wes Jekel (1:41.09) and Ohio State’s Thomas Watkins (1:41.69) added in some 1:41s to the field.

Men’s 100 Freestyle
Ohio State’s Ruslan Gaziev out-dueled Indiana’s Van Mathias for the title in the 100 free by two tenths, with Gaziev flipping first at the halfway point and then extending the margin. Gaziev finished in 41.38, two tenths clear of Mathias’ 41.58, and he broke the meet record of 41.43 set by former Indiana star and two-time U.S. Olympian Blake Pieroni in 2018. Those times rank fourth and sixth, respectively, in the country so far this season.
Indiana’s Rafael Miroslaw took third in 42.38, just ahead of the Buckeyes’ James Ward and Purdue’s Brady Samuels (42.41). However, despite Ohio State’s win, Indiana ended up outscoring the Buckeyes in this race (100 to 83) thanks to depth, including eighth-place finisher Gavin Wright, and the Hoosiers once again extended their lead.

Men’s 200 Breaststroke
Minnesota fifth-year swimmer Max McHugh has been an NCAA champion in the 200 breaststroke (along with three 100-yard victories), and he is the sixth-fastest man ever in the eight-lap event. His final race at a conference championship meet produced another title as he led wire-to-wire on the way to a time of 1:50.20. That time ranks McHugh third in the country this season behind Arizona State’s Leon Marchand and Florida’s Aleksas Savickas.
As for the team competition, Indiana closed the door on a longshot Ohio State comeback by finishing 2-3-4-5 in this event. The Hooisers’ Josh Matheny took second in 1:51.23, which ranks 10th in the country, and he was followed by teammates Jassen Yep (1:52.33), Max Reich (1:52.75) and Luke Barr (1:54.37). Meanwhile, no Buckeyes swam in the championship final, and Indiana stretched the lead to 285 points.

Men’s 200 Butterfly
Brendan Burns completed his double successfully. After a win and the country’s fastest time in the 200 back, he returned less than an hour later and won the 200 fly as well, overcoming a challenge from Michigan’s Gal Cohen Groumi before pulling away on the last 50 to clinch the win. And just like in the 200 back, Burns swam the fastest time in the country, his 1:39.51 beating out Leon Marchand’s 1:39.57 from midseason for the top mark.
Cohen Groumi finished second in 1:40.21, which moved him into a tie for third nationally with NC State’s Aiden Hayes, while another Hoosier, Tomer Frankel, took third in 1:40.97, good for sixth nationally. Northwestern’s Ben Miller was fourth in 1:41.43. The 1-3 finish by Indiana pushed the margin over Ohio State to more than 300 points.

Men’s 400 Freestyle Relay
While Indiana had already secured the team title, it looked like Ohio State had pulled off a stunning comeback to win the last relay of the meet after Ruslan Gaziev, already the Big Ten champion in the 100 free, anchored the Buckeyes’ quartet in 40.78. Ohio State touched 0.15 ahead of Indiana, 2:47.96 to 2:48.11, but Ohio State was disqualified for a false start on the third leg of the relay.
That made Indiana the winner, with Van Mathias, Gavin Wight, Tomer Frankel and Rafael Miroslaw putting together the sixth-fastest relay in the country. Miroslaw had the quickest split with his 41.68 after Mathias led off in 41.96.
Michigan’s team of Bence Szabados, Cam Peel, Nikola Acin and Wyatt Davis finished second in 2:49.44, and Wisconsin’s Jake Newmark, Andrew Benson, Ben Wiegand and Nico Butera grabbed third in 2:51.47.
