2023 Big Ten Men’s Championships, Day 2: Indiana Grabs Two Top Seeds
Indiana won one of the two relays on the first day of the 2023 Big Ten Men’s Championships Wednesday night. Thursday morning, the Hoosiers grabbed the top seed in two of the three swimming events as they chase a title.

500 Freestyle
Bar Soloveychik continues his hot spring by taking the top seed in 4:16.46. That’s only .13 ahead of Jake Newmark of Wisconsin and sets up what should be an exciting finale. Charlie Clark of Ohio State was third, and the Buckeyes are big winners for sneaking three into the A final. Indiana only has two in the top eight, led by fifth-place Mikey Calvillo.

200 individual medley
Luke Barr went 1:34.14, the top seed by just a tenths over Purdue’s Nick Sherman. They’ll all be looking to escape the blue-and-gold wave of five Wolverines in the A final. Gal Groumi leads them in third, all under 1:45. Alex Quach of Ohio State crept into the final in seventh to break the blockade.

50 freestyle
Van Mathias set the pace in the 50 in 19.16 seconds. Bence Szabados of Michigan was second in 19.19, while Ohio State’s Ruslan Gaziev and Michigan’s Cam Peel tied for the third seed in 19.24.
There’s precious little to separate them. Szabados entered with the top seed in 19.36. Both Mathias and Penn State’s Victor Baganha had been 19.38. Baganha was .01 slower in prelims to get the fifth seed. Two swimmers who entered with 19.4s, Rafael Miroslaw and Andrew Benson, dropped to the B final, as did Finn Brooks of Indiana, who had been 19.39. Three B finalists for the Hoosiers is a missed opportunity for their team aspirations.
