2023 Big Ten Men’s Championships, Day 1: Ohio State Wins Thrilling 200 Medley Relay

If the 2023 Big Ten Men’s Championships are going to follow the lead set by the 200 medley relay that opened the competition Wednesday, then it’s going to be a doozy.

Ohio State edged Michigan by four hundredths of a second, and top six squads all undercut the University of Michigan pool record to start the competition with a bang.

The four-day meet runs through Saturday with only two relays on the opening night. The split in the relays between Ohio State and Indiana leave them tied with 118 points each after 1 day.

200 medley relay

The Buckeyes won the event last year, but three of those swimmers are gone – two swimmers and Hunter Armstrong, who opted out of NCAA swim. No matter.

Alex Quach, Pete Krusinki, James Ward and Ruslan Gaziev set an NCAA A cut of 1:23.03 to win the event and set a Canham Natatorium record. They edged Michigan by .04. Gaziev did that on the anchor, entering with a deficit of .06 and turning it around in a race-best 18.56 split. Quach, who swam fly last year, was out second in 20.96, a tenth behind Michigan’s Wyatt Davis. Ohio State’s time is the third-fastest in program history.

The Wolverines and third-place Indiana, which went 1:53.52, notched A cuts.

Purdue was fourth, just .10 off the A standard, and Wisconsin also got under 1:24 in a school-record 1:23.92. Minnesota was sixth in 1:24.21, downing a program record set in 2018.

800 freestyle relay

Indiana defended its 800 free title by banking an NCAA A cut of 6:10.80. Rafael Miroslaw, Tomer Frankel, Brendan Burns and Van Mathias was that foursome, with Burns (1:32.03) delivering the fastest split of the race. That same foursome went 6:11.96 to win a year ago. It’s their second straight title and fifth in the last seven years.

They were out front from the beginning and ran away. Michigan finished second in an NCAA A cut of 6:13.51.
