2023 ACC Championships: Virginia Women, NC State Men Open Up Early Advantages
Conference championship season in Division I opened with a bang Tuesday evening in Greensboro, N.C., as the very first race of the ACC Championships produced an American record by the University of Virginia women in the 200 medley relay, with the team of Gretchen Walsh, Alex Walsh, Lexi Cuomo and Kate Douglass achieving the new mark. Shortly thereafter, the NC State men followed up with the fastest time in the country so far this season in the same event, and both teams would add additional wins later in the evening in their respective 800 freestyle relays.
In the women’s team competition, North Carolina has an early lead with 202 points, followed by Virginia (166), Louisville (160), NC State (140) and Notre Dame (126), with the results of 3-meter diving (and the Tar Heels’ depth in that event) weighing heavily. When swimming individual events begin Wednesday, the likes of the Cavaliers and Wolfpack are expected to pull away from the field.
On the men’s side, NC State already has a lead with 196 points while North Carolina (147), Notre Dame (145), Virginia Tech (137) and Pittsburgh (133.5) round out the top five.

Women’s 200 Medley Relay
For the third consecutive year, the University of Virginia women have posted the fastest time in history in the 200 medley relay at the ACC Championships. The Cavaliers, who set American, NCAA and U.S. Open records in three out of five relays at last season’s conference meet, opened up this one by eclipsing their previous all-time fastest mark in the 200 medley relay by eight hundredths of a second. The team of Gretchen Walsh, Alex Walsh, Lexi Cuomo and Kate Douglass posted a mark of 1:31.73.
Three of the four swimmers returned from last year’s relay, with Alex Walsh stepping into the breaststroke leg for the graduated Alexis Wenger. Gretchen Walsh led off in 22.65, which was the fastest 50 backstroke split in history, beating the mark of 22.76 that NC State’s Katharine Berkoff posted at last year’s NCAA Championships. That mark was broken almost immediately when LSU’s Maggie Mac Neil went 22.52 on the same night at the SEC Championships.
The older Walsh sister split 26.10 on breaststroke, and Cuomo went 22.49 on butterfly. Douglass, the NCAA champion and American-record holder in the 50 freestyle, came home in 20.49. While the versatile Walsh could not match the splits posted by Wenger on breaststroke, Cuomo and Douglass both beat their top times from last season to cement another record.
North Carolina State finished second in the race in 1:33.02 with Berkoff, Heather MacCausland, Kylee Alons and Abby Arens. While Berkoff was a half-second behind her all-time best form on backstroke, Alons went 21.99 on butterfly, faster than any woman in the field at last year’s NCAA Championships. While the Wolfpack finished more than a second behind the Cavaliers, Virginia and NC State were the only teams to post quicker marks all of last season.
Louisville, with Abby Hay, Cecilia Viberg, Christiana Regenauer and Gabi Albiero, placed third in 1:34.23, with Albiero splitting a sizzling 20.88 on the anchor leg.

Men’s 200 Medley Relay
The big favorites to capture the men’s conference title this week began the meet in dominant fashion in the 200 medley relay. Kacper Stokowski, last year’s national champion in the 100 backstroke, helped guide NC State to an early lead, and Mason Hunter, Nyls Korstanje and David Curtiss built upon that margin as the Wolfpack finished in 1:22.25, just over a half-second off the conference record of 1:21.69 that NC State swam to tie for third in this event at last year’s NCAA Championships.
NC State’s time was the fastest in the country for the 2022-23 season, beating the 1:22.60 that Arizona State posted in a dual meet against Stanford last month. Stokowski, Korstanje and Curtiss all return from last year’s top NC State squad while Hunter, a graduate transfer from Michigan, stepped in for the graduated Rafal Kusto.
Virginia’s team of Matt Brownstead, Noah Nichols, Max Edwards and August Lamb finished second in 1:23.03 while Louisville’s Charlie Crush, Denis Petrashov, Dalton Lowe and Abdelrahman El-Araby placed third in 1:23.59. Both of those relays were anchored with 18.5 freestyle splits, and both final times would have been good enough to score B-final points at last year’s NCAA Championships.

North Carolina got off to an ideal start in diving with Aranza Vazquez topping the 3-meter board with a score of 381.85, while teammate Emily Grund placed third at 350.90. Splitting the two Tar Heels was Miami’s Mia Vallee, who scored 367.20.

Women’s 800 Freestyle Relay
The Virginia women added a second relay victory to complete the Tuesday night session in the 800 freestyle relay, with the team of Reilly Tiltmann, Aimee Canny, Claire Tuggle and Ella Nelson finishing in 6:55.15, beating the 6:56.45 recorded by Stanford at midseason for the country’s fastest time so far. Canny, a midseason addition from South Africa, posted the fastest split of the field with her 1:42.79, while Nelson’s 1:43.30 ranked third in the field.
Notably, Virginia managed this performance without Alex Walsh competing. Walsh provided the fastest split on Virginia’s second-place 800 free relay at last year’s NCAA Championships, but Cavaliers head coach Todd DeSorbo opted to keep Walsh off the relay this time around and focus on the other four relays plus three individual events. Walsh is occupying a more valuable medley relay role this year with breaststroker Alexis Wenger graduated. We’ll see if this switch is only for the conference meet or if Walsh will sit out this relay at NCAAs as well. Notably, only three teams (Stanford, Virginia and Cal) beat this mark of 6:55.15 all of last season.
Louisville’s team of Tristen Ulett, Paige Hetrick, Fernanda Celidonio and Ella Welch placed second in 6:57.51, with Hetrick posting a 1:43.10 split that ranked second overall behind Canny. NC State finished third in 6:59.22 with Abbey Webb, Katherine Helms, Sarah Watson and Annabel Crush. Those times rank third and fourth nationally, respectively, pending the results of the SEC Championships later in the night.

Men’s 800 Freestyle Relay
The Wolfpack made it two-for-two in men’s relay wins with an 800 free relay win as Bartosz Piszczorowicz and Luke Miller each posted 1:31 splits to lift their team over Louisville. NC State’s Noah Bowers, Piszczorowicz, Miller and Hunter Tapp combined for a time of 6:10.65, which was 2.41 seconds off the meet record a team also including Miller, Piszczorowicz and Tapp set last season. Texas, Arizona State and Cal are the only teams to record quicker times so far this season.
Louisville provided a strong test for NC State, and it took a 1:31.65 split for Miller on the third leg to move ahead of the Cardinals. The team of Murilo Sartori, Denis Loktev, Guy Brooks and Michael Eastman finished in 6:11.26, good for No. 5 nationally, while Virginia Tech’s Luis Dominguez Calonge, Carles Coll Marti, Mario Molla Yanes and Nico Garcia took third in 6:14.86.
