2022 SEC Championships, Night 2 Finals: Florida Goes 3-for-3 in Relays

Three relays up, three wins down for Florida. Between the relay and five finalists in the 500 freestyle, the Gators stand to take control of the men’s race in a big way on Night 2 of the 2022 SEC Championships, the program seeking its 10th consecutive championship.

The latest installment was dominant, with Eric Friese putting the Gators in the lead and Macguire McDuff blowing the field away to go 1:15.18. The margin of victory was just a tidy little 1.3 seconds in an SEC Championships record.

It started a big day for the Gators, who sailed into the lead in the team standings, an edge it doesn’t look likely to lose.

The full recap of the night’s events are below …

Women’s 200 freestyle relay

Alabama won the 200 medley relay on Tuesday. Tennessee won the 800 free relay. Put them together and what do you get?

Well, a decisive battle for Alabama’s sprint contingent. The Crimson Tide won in 1:26.93 with the team of Morgan Scott, Cora Dupre, Kalia Antoniou and Kailyn Winter. It’s .55 slower than their pool record from November. Dupre went 21.48 on the second leg for the fastest split, while Antoniou, who missed the A final in the 50 in the morning, took out some frustration with a 21.74.

Tennessee was second with the team of AJ Kutsch, Mona McSharry, Jasmine Rumley and Tjasa Pintar in 1:27.39. The top four finishers – with Missouri third and Auburn fourth – had already sealed auto cuts. Florida (fifth in 1:28.15) added an auto cut, while Arkansas (sixth in 1:28.19) upgraded its B cut.

Men’s 200 freestyle relay

Just a ho-hum race at SECs with four swimmers sub-19. No other team had stitched together more than two.

Adam Chaney started it at 18.92. Friese turned in an 18.80. Kieran Smith, who has been working on his sprinting, went 18.77 and the freshman McDuff brought it home in 18.69. There was never any catching the Gators, despite Jordan Crooks leading off Tennessee in 18.72. The Vols upgraded a B cut to an auto time in 1:16.48 for second.

Auburn, which held an A cut, was third in 1:16.49. Georgia went 1:16.71 for fourth, going from no cut to an A cut. (Luca Urlando turned in a 19.00 second leg). Further down, an 18.50 for LSU’s Brooks Curry in the eighth-place relay – not quite the 18.14 he anchored the medley relay in on Tuesday.

Women’s 500 freestyle

Julia Mrozinski’s introduction to the SEC is a winning one. The Tennessee freshman took control early and roared away with the win in 4:35.95, more than two seconds quicker than runner-up Kensey McMahon of Alabama. Tennessee’s Kristen Stege was third in 4:38.50, big points in the Vols’ quest to repeat as champions.

The 2022 SEC Championships didn’t produce an NCAA A cut, however, Mrozinski just off the auto standard by .19 seconds.

Men’s 500 freestyle

The battle in the men’s 500 free relay did not disappoint, except for those miffed at Matt Sates for spoiling the party. The Georgia freshman set a Tennessee pool record in 4:09.06, getting the jump ont the field early and taking the win. It’s a cut of more than four seconds from what he did in the morning.

It spoils the rematch of NCAAs that was the battle of Jake Magahey against Kieran Smith. The Florida senior was denied a third straight SEC title in his signature event, the NCAA record holder finishing second in 4:10.15. He used a 23.49 final 50 to roar past Magahey into third, relegating the reigning NCAA champion to third in 4:10.22.

Florida cashed in no matter what: Alfonso Mestre in fourth, Trey Freeman fifth, Oskar Lindholm seventh and Tyler Watson eighth. With a 10th and a 17th, the Gators netted 150 points from the event.

Women’s 200 individual medley

Fab freshmen of the international variety strike again for Tennessee. This time it was Ellen Walshe, the Irishwoman winning in an NCAA A cut of 1:52.97. She took control with a 24.07 backstroke swim and stayed a second clear of Zoie Hartman of Georgia in 1:53.79. Walshe’s was the only A cut of the event.

Alabama finished third with Diana Petkova. Slight disappointment for the Vols in Sara Stolter, the fourth seed from prelims, sliding to eighth.

Men’s 200 individual medley

Georgia is two-for-two in men’s events for the evening as sophomore Luca Urlando dominated the field. He was barely ahead of Missouri’s Danny Kovac after the butterfly, but he pulled ahead of the field on backstroke and never looked back. Urlando, best known for his abilities in the butterfly events, did not even swim the 200 IM last season, but he swam a time of 1:41.19 that would have placed fifth at last year’s NCAA Championships.

Meanwhile, the battle for second and third was a back-and-forth affair during the second half of the race. Alabama’s Derek Maas was seventh after 100 yards, while Texas A&M’s Kaloyan Bratanov was eight, but both surged after that. Maas, who recorded the fastest breaststroke split in the field at 29.18, finished second in 1:42.90, while Bratanov closed in 24.27, tops in the field, to take third in 1:42.98.

Women’s 50 freestyle

Tennessee’s winning streak to open the women’s meet was snapped in the women’s splash-and-dash as Alabama’s Morgan Scott smashed a 21.54 to touch out Tennessee’s AJ Kutsch by six hundredths. The Volunteers didn’t get the win, but they did place 2-3 here with Kutsch and Jasmine Rumley, while seven out of the eight swimmers in the heat broke 22 seconds.

Scott and Kutsch moved to third and fourth in the national rankings in the event, trailing only Kate Douglass and Maggie Mac Neil, who went 1-2 in the event at last year’s NCAA Championships.

Men’s 50 freestyle

Jordan Crooks has been a revelation for the Tennessee Volunteers during the first full day of the SEC Championships. Seeded at 19.39 in the 50 free entering the day, he swam 18.84 in prelims, then an 18.72 leading off the 200 free relay and, finally, a 18.53 to edge out Olympian Brooks Curry in the individual 50 free. Crooks vaulted all the way to fifth all-time in the 50 free behind Caeleb DresselRyan Hoffer, Cesar Cielo and Matt Targett, and his lifetime best is now faster than anyone else currently in college swimming.

Curry, meanwhile, finished in 18.67 to place second for LSU, and nestled into 11th all-time in the event. Curry’s time is also quicker than any other active college swimmer. Third went to Florida’s Adam Chaney in 18.81, while Gators Macguire McDuff and Alberto Mestre placed fifth and sixth to help the team extend its lead.
