2022 SEC Championships, Day 3 Prelims: Ellen Walshe Sets up Daring Double

Ellen Walshe has adapted quickly to the world of college swimming. At her first NCAAs, the Tennessee freshman added an impressive double to her schedule on Thursday, the third day of the 2022 SEC Championships.

Walshe is the top seed out of prelims in the women’s 400 individual medley and the second seed in the 100 butterfly. Walshe has already shown what she can do in the 200 IM, which she won by nearly a second on Wednesday night. She’s a big reason why the Vols are in good position to reclaim the SEC title, in their home pool.

Women’s 400 individual medley

Walshe hammered through her breaststroke leg to take control formally, going 4:04.26 to win prelims. The swim gives Tennessee three swimmers in the A final, though the top seed entering prelims, Alexis Yager, slipped to sixth in the morning. Kentucky has three in the A final, led by Bailey Bonnett in third, while Mabel Zavaros of Florida dropped time to finish second. Crucially for the team points race, Georgia got five swimmers back but were locked out of the A final.

Men’s 400 individual medley

What was anticipated to be a daring double for Kieran Smith didn’t materialize, with the Florida senior instead option for just the 400 IM on Thursday instead of the double with the 200 free. Smith was quickest in the event in 3:43.26, just ahead of teammate Mason Laur. Given the depth in the 200 free, the IM might be the better team decision for the Gators’ quest for a team title.

Georgia put two in the A final, led by  Andrew Abruzzo in third and Ian Grum fourth.

Sarah Thompson set the pace for Missouri in 51.38, slightly under her season-best. Tennessee again stands to cash in on the team points battle, with Walshe second in 51.45, Trude Rothrock third in 51.66 and Sara Stolter seventh. Mallory Beil was ninth. After being shut out of the 400 IM final, Dakota Luther and Callie Dickinson reached the A final for Georgia.

Fourth in the final is Rhyan White, the Alabama Olympian. It’s an appetizer with the backstroke events backloaded in the schedule.
