2022 Pac-12 Championships, Day 2 Finals: Torri Huske Romps to 200 IM Title
2022 Pac-12 Championships: Torri Huske Romps to 200 IM Title
In her first taste of the college postseason, Torri Huske is off to a flying start.
After a winning start Wednesday in the 800 free relay, the Stanford freshman and American Olympian won the 200 individual medley by more than a second Thursday night in the second finals session of the 2022 Pac-12 Championships. She then added a leadoff leg on Stanford’s winning 200 freestyle relay that was decisively faster than the champion of the individual event, helping the Cardinal stand in a dominant position in the team rankings.
Huske’s time of 1:52.42 bested a loaded 200 IM field that featured five seniors and a slew of the conference’s elite swimmers. It buzzed near a meet record and helped solidify Stanford’s early hold on the meet lead.

An event without Brooke Forde lacked a little star power, but it made up for that with a thrilling race in the final. Erica Lanning, the second seed out of prelims, got to the wall first in 4:38.80, holding off a charge by Stanford’s Morgan Tankersley. Tankersley charged home in 26.75 to make it interesting but ended up .29 back at the touch in the battle of seniors.
Cal took the next three spots, led by Ayla Spitz’s 4:40.89, to bolster their team score.

200 individual medley
Torri Huske was out fast, and the field was never able to draw her back into their clutches. She was out in 23.55 and posted the fastest split in the field in each of the first two 50s to take control. She and runner-up Isabel Ivey of Cal (1:53.54) both notched NCAA A cuts.
An interesting final saw movement up and down from prelims, with only one swimmer – Brooke Forde in third – finishing in the same spot in prelims and finals. Forde’s time of 1:54.23 was a B cut. Cal’s Leah Polonsky jumped up from eighth in prelims to fourth, making it two freshmen in the top four. The top seed from prelims, Calypso Sheridan of USC, was faster at night in 1:55.27 but still slid from first to fifth.

50 freestyle
We have a good, old-fashioned swimming tie. USC’s Anicka Delgado and Stanford’s Anya Goeders tied for the win in the 50 free, both hitting the wall in identical times of 21.89 seconds. Goeders was out faster in 10.42 for her first 50, but Delgado was stronger off the wall, covering the final 25 yards in 11.25 seconds, the fastest in the field.
Delgado and Goeders entered finals seeded third and second, respectively. Top seed Taylor Ruck of Stanford finished third in 22.04, despite having the fastest reaction time off the blocks on the field. UCLA got points from Claire Grover in fourth.

3-meter diving
As though Stanford needs it, given their depth in the pool, the Cardinal don’t let up when it comes time for diving. Three divers in the top four spots and four in the top six mean even more points for the title chasers.
Lina Sculti got the job done on 3-meter in a closer event than prelims might have indicated. The Stanford senior led by more than 30 points after prelims but eked out a win in finals by just over a point, her score of 370.75 getting the job done over Arizona senior Delaney Schnell (369.30).
Stanford added bronze (Daria Lenz), fourth (Maria Papworth) and sixth (Lauren Burch).

200 freestyle relay
The race was over not long after Torri Huske got in the water. Her time of 21.43 on the opening 50 was nearly a half-second faster than the winning time in the 50 free individual event. No one was in three-quarters of a second of her over the first 50 yards (USC’s Hanna Henderson hit a 22.17).
That sent the Cardinal off and flying, with Taylor Ruck, Amy Tang and Anya Goeders finishing off a 1:26.56, an NCAA A cut. Ruck matched Huske’s 21.43. The Cardinal had four of the 11 sub-22-second legs in the field.
Cal was second in an A cut of 1:27.84, with Eloise Riley, Elise Garcia, Emily Gantriis and Isabel Ivey, Ivey bringing it home in 21.60. Laticia-Leigh Transom’s 21.66 anchored USC to 1:28.02, also an A cut.
