The 2022 NCAA Women’s Division I Swimming and Diving Championships kicked off with the 200-yard medley relay and defending NCAA team champion Virginia looking to build on the team’s first title with a fast start to this year’s meet.
Mission accomplished.
The Cavaliers started strong, breaking their own NCAA record in the event, finishing in 1:32.16 behind Gretchen Walsh, Alexis Wenger, Lexi Cuomo and Kate Douglass , the same quartet that broke the NCAA record at the ACC Championships last month. This time broke the NCAA meet record of 1:33.11 set by Stanford in 2018 (Allie Howe, Kim Williams, Janet Hu and Simone Manuel).
“At ACCs, we exceeded expectations for this relay,” Douglass said. “Coming into this meet, we wanted to go faster if we could, but our goal was to win our team’s first relay title in this event.”
Walsh split a 22.81 on the backstroke leading off (which was extremely fast but not the fastest in the race) before Wenger went a 26.08 in the breaststroke. Cuomo split 22.72 and Douglass anchored in 20.55.
NC State’s Katharine Berkoff split a stunning 22.70 in the 50 backstroke to give the Wolfpack the early lead, but the Cavaliers stormed back in the butterfly with Cuomo giving a lead to Douglass, who continued to separate from the field. NC State’s Sophie Hansson spit a 26.05 before Abby Arens (22.93) and Kylee Alons (21.22) followed for the Wolfpack, who also finished faster than the previous meet record in 1:32.96.
Ohio State finished third with Emily Crane, Hannah Bach, Katherine Zenick and Amy Fuller finishing in 1:33.16.
Alabama was fourth with Rhyan White, Avery Wiseman, Morgan Scott and Kalia Antoniou (1:33.29).
Texas finished fifth with Julia Cook, Anna Elendt, Olivia Bray and Emma Sticklen (1:34.46).
Sixth went to Michigan with Maggie Mac Neil, Letitia Sim, Olivia Carter and Lindsay Flynn (1:34.53).
Cal took seventh with Isabelle Stadden, Leah Polonsky, Mia Kragh and Elise Garcia.
In the second heed, Cal (1:34.60) held off USC (1:34.66) with a good touch at the end from Garcia. It kept the Bears in the top eight, while the Trojans ended up ninth.
Louisville took the first of three heats in 1:34.62 with a strong anchor from Gabi Albiero, and finished eighth.
Virginia set the NCAA, American and U.S. Open record at the ACC Championships last month as Gretchen Walsh, Alexis Wenger, Leci Cuomo and Kate Douglass touching the wall in 1:31.81.
Meanwhile, NC State was the defending champion with Katharine Berkoff, Sophie Hansson, Sirena Rowe, Kylie Alons finishing in 1:33.18 it was the third NCAA title in the event for NC State all time.
Stanford leads the all-time event winning a stunning 14 NCAA titles in the event. The second-most all time is Cal with five. But the past four years has seen four different champions with Cal winning in 2017, followed by Stanford, Tennessee and NC State.
