The Day 3 finals session of the 2022 NCAA Women’s Division I Swimming and Diving Championships continued from the McAuley Aquatic Center at Georgia Tech with the 100 breaststroke.

The NCAA prelims setup .. NC State’s Sophie Hansson is the defending NCAA Champion in the event but qualified fourth, opening up a lot of possibilities. Texas’ Anna Elendt went a 56.88 to beat Hansson head-to-head to take the top overall seed. USC’s Pac-12 champion Kaitlyn Dobler took the second seeding 57.55 after winning her heat. Virginia senior Alexis Wenger took the third spot in 57.67 ahead of Hansson (57.71). It was a big event for Northwestern as the Wildcats earned two finals spots.

The NCAA finals race …  Alexis Wenger turned first in 26.66 just ahead of the rest of the field that was nearly even. But quick stroke work in the final 25 gave Kaitlyn Dobler the title in 56.93. Wenger took second in 56.97.

“I am so happy, especially after finishing second last year. It was my goal this year,” Dobler said. “It means a lot. Pretty much all year since I touched second I had that goal to come back and get first. To be honest, I thought I was going to get second based on where I was on the last wall, but I put my head down, and my coach really talked about how our teammates help will us to the wall and I truly believe that’s the reason I got first.”

It has been a trying yet stunningly successful season for the Dobler and the Trojans.

“I was out with Mono for two weeks and I got a greater appreciation for swimming in general, not just winning,” Dobler said.

Sophie Hansson was third in 57.01, holding off Tennessee sophomore Mona McSharry, who touched the wall in 57.18. Texas sophomore Anna Elendt, who had the top seed in prelims, finished fifth in 57.24, just ahead of Ohio State’s Hannah Bach (57.32). Northwestern took the last two finals spots with Sophie Angus taking seventh in 58.00 and Tara Vovk taking eighth in 58.31.
