2022 NCAA Men’s Championships: Stanford’s Andrei Minakov Takes Top Seed in 100 Butterfly
The 2022 NCAA Men’s Division I Swimming and Diving Championships continued on Day 3 from the McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech with the 100-yard butterfly prelims.
The NCAA and American record is 42.80 set by Florida’s Caeleb Dressel in 2018. One of Dressel’s records went down on Day 2 in the 200 IM, but this record does not look to be as in danger as the 200 IM. The top seed heading into the meet was Stanford sophomore Andrei Minakov (43.90).
Stanford’s Andrei Minakov built an early lead in the final heat, then turned on the jets and won the heat in 43.77, just under his seed time. He won his heat over NC State’s Nyls Konstantje (44.43).
Several of the late heats were closely contested, setting up a pretty intriguing NCAA final.
Georgia’s Luca Urlando won heat 4 with a 44.24, just ahead of Ohio State’s Alex Quach (44.93).
Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan won heat 5 with a 44.21 with a strong back half of the race, just ahead of Tomer Frankel of Indiana (44.38).
Who has something left in the tank? Who left it all in the prelims just to make the final? Tonight’s final will be especially intriguing to see if Minakov can continue his blistering pace, and to see if anyone else in the field can elevate to that level at the right time for a spectacular finish.
