The 2022 NCAA Men’s Division I Swimming and Diving Championships begin from the McAuley Aquatic Center at Georgia Tech and couldn’t have started much faster in the 200 medley relay. Three backstrokers led off under the previous record and two teams eclipsed the NCAA record as the meet was off to a scorching start.
After watching two backstrokers destroy the 50 back mark set by Ryan Murphy, Florida got another split under Murphy’s mark, but kept on rolling to the NCAA record of 1:21.13, extra sweet for the quartet after finishing runner-up last year.
Adam Chaney led off with a 20.19 split, which was stunning and faster than the previous record, but was still only the the third fastest of the event.
“(Anthony Nesty) was talking to us before the racing and telling us how hard this sets the tone for the rest of the meet. He got us fired up and pretty prepared for the race,” Chaney said. “It is everything to us (to break the NCAA record). To see it up on the wall, I can’t even explain it. It makes me emotional just talking about it.”
Cheaney gave way to Dillon Hillis (23.20).
“It is a pretty magical moment for our team,” Hillis said. “We have been dreaming about it for a year. Last year, we got second and came back with this fire to make it happen this year. I will always remember this with these guys. To be able to hold that record with these guys, it is so powerful to see the hard work pay off.”
Eric Friese split a 19.36 in the butterfly and agreed with Hillis.
“This is something we have been thinking about all year, every week, every day,” Friese said. “It feels good to finally be able to show what we got. We knew we had it, we just had to show it in the pool, and it was time to show.”
Will Davis anchored the race in 18.38.
“Our team came here to win and winning the first relay set a strong tone for the rest of the meet. We were so close last year,” Davis said. “We had that relay in mind and to actually win with such a fast time – I didn’t even expect to go that fast. It was a magical moment to share with my relay. It means the world to me. I had a rough year and trials was a confidence booster. Adam taught me how to have fun with the sport again and it was a big game-changer.”
Texas finished second overall with Anthony Grimm (20.65), Caspar Corbeau (22.55), Alvin Jiang (20.08) and Cameron Auchinachie (18.08) finishing in 1:21.36, also below the previous record set in 2017 by Texas.
They both beat the 2017 Texas mark of 1:21.54 set by John Shebat, Will Licon, Joseph Schooling and Brett Ringgold.
Cal had another historical performance in the event.
In the third heat, Bjorn Seeliger started Cal with fastest 50 backstroke split in history, a 20.08. Meanwhile, NC State’s Kacper Stokowski went a 20.16, both passing Ryan Murphy’s mark that had stood for six years. It was a stunning start for both teams, but what was even more stunning was how they finished.
Cal and NC State tied in the third heat in 1:21.69. The performances tied both teams for third place overall and broke the pool record and school records for both teams.
Seeliger gave way to Liam Bell (22.71), Trenton Julian (20.12) and Daniel Carr (18.78).
Stokowski gave way to Rafak Kusto (23.33), Nyls Korstanje (19.55) and David Curtiss (18.76) and the Wolfpack finished in 1:21.69.
Alabama was fifth with Matthew Menke, Derek Maas, Tyler Sesvold and Jonathan Berneburg finished in 1:22.04.
Harvard’s Dean Farris led off the 200 medley relay with a 50 backstroke split of 20.36, the sixth-fastest 50 back in history at the time, before the later heats pushed his timed down the list a bit. It gave Harvard a big lead and from Lane 1, the Crimson won heat 2 in 1:22.42 and the Crimson finished ninth overall.
