2022 Big Ten Men’s Championships: Brendan Burns Wins Twice as Indiana Seals Title
If Indiana was looking for a flourish to finish off the 2022 Big Ten Men’s Championships, Brendan Burns provided it Saturday night.
Burns won the men’s 200 backstroke and then turned around barely an hour later to claim the 200 butterfly. That gives him back-to-back Big Ten Swimmer of the Championship honors and six career individual Big Ten titles. Teammate Andrew Capobianco earned consecutive Diver of the Championship nods, with Capobianco completing the diving sweep with a platform title Saturday night.
Both standouts added a team title to their ledger, the first for the Hoosiers since 2019 and fourth in six years. The surged on Friday, consolidated Saturday morning and capped it in the night session to run away from Ohio Sate and end to a two-year run of Michigan dominance.

In what is usually Michigan’s territory, Charlie Clark reigned Saturday, going 14:36.02 to set a Purdue pool record and win. It’s also the lone NCAA A cut of the meet. Michigan’s Jake Mitchell was eight seconds back in second, with fellow Olympian Michael Brinegar fourth. Wisconsin’s Yigit Aslan was third.

200 backstroke
Brendan Burns got the hard part of his double out of the way first, going 1:39.34 to set a pool record in an NCAA B cut time. He entered as the second seed. It was the third seed that pushed him. That was 500 free champ Jacob Newmark of Wisconsin, who led by three tenths at 150 yards before Burns closed in 25.47 to nip him by .16. Burns’ Indiana teammate Gabriel Fantoni was third in 1:40.26.

Hunter Armstrong was slower than in the morning, meaning the Big Ten Championships record lives to see another year. But he still had enough speed to win in 41.78 seconds, leading a Buckeye parade to the wall.
Ohio State swept the top three spots. Ruslan Gaziev brought the outside smoke to rise from eighth in prelims to second in finals in 42.07. He was a tenth up on teammate Sem Andreis, the second seed in the morning. The point tally briefly brought Ohio State within 56 points of Indiana, but that margin would be short-lived.

200 breaststroke
If you can find some room on the long CV of Max McHugh, you can pencil the meet record in the 200 back onto it. McHugh went 1:49.45 Saturday to win the event in which he’s the reigning NCAA champion. He also completes the breaststroke double for the second straight year.
In the process, he destroyed the pool record (Marat Amaltdinov, 2016) by more than three seconds and trimmed .85 off the meet record, held since 2019 by Indiana’s Ian Finnerty.
Indiana’s latest breaststroke star, Josh Matheny, finished second in 1:50.65. Both he and McHugh clocked A cuts. Caleb Aman got Wisconsin another podium place in third.

Brendan Burns had a loaded final heat to contend with, but he navigated it with aplomb. Ahead by the halfway point, Burns pulled away, working a 25.59 third 50 to push past Gal Groumi and win in 1:39.81. The time is a pool record, six tenths slower than his time from last year. It’s also an NCAA A cut.
Michigan’s Groumi finished second in 1:40.59, followed by 100 fly champ Alex Quach in 1:41.81. Both are freshmen. Federico Burdisso, Northwestern’s Italian Olympian, was fourth.

Platform diving
Well, the balloting for Big Ten Diver of the Year should be fairly straightforward.
There’s no doubt about it being Andrew Capobianco, who went 3-for-3 in conference titles. This one was fairly comfortable, though he wasn’t the top seed out of prelims, sitting in fifth. He left no doubt in the final, scoring 469.90 points to win by 26 points.
The future is bright, though, with four freshmen in the top eight and five in the top 10, led by Purdue’s Jordan Rzepka. His 443.10 edged fellow rookie Carson Tyler of Indiana by just over two points. It’s Rzepka’s second silver medal of the week.

400 freestyle relay
One more meet record for Hunter Armstrong and Ohio State on the way out. It’s not a surprise that the team producing the top three finishers in the individual event and then adding 100 fly champ Alex Quach would win this relay. But Indiana gave the Buckeyes a push, coming within eight tenths of the upset.
Armstrong set the Buckeyes into clean water with a leadoff 41.60, just .06 off the time he set in the morning and shy of the individual Big Ten Championships record. The squad of Armstrong, Sem Andreis, Quach and Ruslan Gaziev did down the meet mark, though, in 2:47.16, more than a second quicker than Indiana’s 2017 time.
Indiana was also under the record, finishing second in 2:47.96, also an A cut. Purdue nabbed an auto cut in third, as did Michigan in fourth.
