2022 Big Ten Men’s Championships, Day 2 Finals: Indiana Medley Relay Goes Record-Setting 3:00.95
2022 Big Ten Men’s Championships: Indiana Medley Relay Goes Record-Setting 3:00.95
Indiana has two wins in three relays at the 2022 Big Ten Men’s Championships to find the Hoosiers in second place overall. The latest set a conference and meet record.
The Hoosiers blasted a time of 3:00.95 in the 400 medley relay, with the squad of Brendan Burns, Joshua Matheny, Tomer Frankel and Rafael Miroslaw. All four are, frighteningly, underclassmen.
Ohio State takes over the lead in the team standings, thanks in part to a win in the 50 freestyle by Hunter Armstrong and a silver medal in the 400 medley relay.

Wisconsin’s Jacob Newmark backed up his top seed from prelims to get the win in 4:12.43. That sets the Purdue pool record, downing the time of Michigan’s Anders Nielsen from 2016 by four tenths. He withstood the late charge by Michigan’s Jake Mitchell, who closed in 24.26 to go from third to second in the final 50 with a time of 4:12.88. Charlie Clark of Ohio State was third in 4:13.77, .08 up on Minnesota freshman Bar Soloveychik.
The top seed entering the meet, Patrick Callan of Michigan, settled for sixth. He was the only senior in the top eight, an A final comprising five sophomores and two freshmen.

Freshmen reign again, with the rookies going 1-2. Gal Groumi, the top seed in the morning, left no doubt in the evening swim, going 1:41.54 to win by nearly a second. Alex Quach of Ohio State was second din 1:42.47, with Michigan senior Jared Daigle rallying in the final 50 to track down Wisconsin’s Wesley Jekel for third.

The only individual NCAA A cut of the evening belonged to Hunter Armstrong, who went 18.93 in the 50 free to leave the field behind. That is .03 under the A cut and the only sub-19 swim of the meet.
Teammate Sem Andreis made it a huge event for the Buckeyes by finishing second din 19.15. Third was Penn State’s Victor Baganha.

1-meter diving
Indiana expectedly dominated diving at the 2022 Big Ten Men’s Championships, but Ohio State’s depth kept the Hoosiers in check.
Andrew Capobianco repeated as the Big Ten champion on the shorter board, scoring 454.25 points. He went 1-2 with teammate Quinn Henninger (435.95) to score big points for the Hoosiers.
In the team category, Ohio State limited the damage with three A finalists and three B finalists, led by Jacob Fielding in fifth. In between came a pair of Purdue divers, with Tyler Downs in third and Greg Duncan fourth.

400 medley relay
Indiana set the pace in 3:00.95, one of four A cuts in the swim. Ohio State was second in 3:01.44, followed by Wisconsin (3:05.09) and Michigan (3:05.44). Indiana lowered its conference record from 3:01.30, set in 2018, and erased a Purdue pool record from 2017.
Indiana’s foursome took the lead in the second half of Josh Matheny’s leg and never looked back. Hunter Armstrong (44.36) got out slightly quicker than Brendan Burns (44.43), and Hudson McDaniel was out as quickly as Matheny. But the Indiana freshman turned in the fastest breaststroke split in 50.76. That six tenths of a second was as all the space they’d need on Ohio State.
Both backstroke times were under the Big 10 record for the 100 backstroke, owned since 2017 by Penn State grad and Irish Olympian Shane Ryan (44.65).
Alex Quach (44.17) had the fastest fly split. Rafael Miroslaw’s 41.21 off the end was the quickest free swim.
Minnesota’s horror show continued with another medley relay disqualification, hence the Golden Gophers sitting last in the team standings.
