2022 Big Ten Men’s Championships, Day 3 Prelims: Bruno Blaskovic, Indiana on the Move

Indiana placed six swimmers in the top three of the five preliminary events on Day 3 of the 2022 Big Ten Men’s Championships Friday morning, in a bid for the Hoosiers to rise from second place and challenge Ohio State’s lead in the team category.

Ohio State finished Thursday night with 487.5 points to 449 for Indiana and 408 for Michigan. No one team is north of 300.

Bruno Blaskovic is the top seed in the 100 butterfly to kick things off. If the seeds hold, Indiana could see place six swimmers on the podium in the night session, which also includes the Hoosier stronghold of 3-meter diving. Indiana leads the way with 10 A finalists in the night session (Ohio State has seven) and 18 total swimmers back (Michigan has 16, Ohio State 15). The 200 freestyle relay is also Friday night.

100 butterfly

Indiana came firing out of the gates, with three of the top four seeds. Both Bruno Blaskovic (45.24) and teammate Tomer Frankel (45.28) dispatched the Purdue record, which had held since 2009 at 45.45 in the hand of Michigan’s Chris Brady. The Big Ten meet record of 44.79, set by Vini Lanza in 2018, is surely in the sights tonight.

Indiana’s Gabriel Fantoni is the fourth seed at 45.39, .07 behind Ohio State freshman Alex Quach. The top seed entering the morning, Michigan’s Gal Groumi, is lurking in sixth at 45.59.

A spread of .16 seconds separates the top four seeds, setting up a scintillating final. Jacob Newmark, the champ in the 500 free, led the way in 1:33.89. Second was Tomer Frankel, in a daring double, in 1:34.01, just ahead of teammate Rafael Miroslaw. Miroslaw is even with Ohio State’s Ruslan Gaziev for the third seed in 1:34.05. (Miroslaw has a flat start 1:31.89 already this week in the 800 free relay.)

Patrick Callan, who has been 1:32.77 this season, earned the fifth seed in 1:34.27. He’s followed by Minnesota’s Bar Soloveychik, who led off the 800 free relay in 1:33.56.

100 breaststroke

All eyes on the reigning NCAA champion, Minnesota’s Max McHugh, who coasted into the third seed in 52.06. It’s only third by .04 seconds, behind Wisconsin’s William Myhre and Hudson McDaniel of Ohio State, but the Minnesota senior is likely to have something special in store for the evening. Whether that lowers his meet record of 50.19 from last season remains to be seen.

Also lurking is Northwestern’s Kevin Houseman, who has been 51.33 but drew an outside lane by going 52.59 to squeak into the final in seventh, and Indiana freshman Josh Matheny (fifth in 52.13). The top six finishers in prelims were separated by a mere .26 seconds.
