2022 Big Ten Men’s Championships, Day 3 Finals: Brendan Burns Wins 100 Back Showdown as Indiana Leads
It turned out to be moving day for Indiana at the 2022 Big Ten Men’s Championships, with a bevy of A finalists (10 in all), plus 3-meter diving. That would be enough to unseat Ohio State from atop the standings by the end of Night 3 of 4 at Big Tens, and it sets up a thrilling final day.
Speaking of thrilling, the two teams vying for the team title ended up going toe-to-toe in the race of the night. By the end of the 100 backstroke, Brendan Burns had taken down a Hunter Armstrong conference record from a night earlier before the ink had even dried and Indiana had secure hold of the lead, though Ohio State whittled a larger lead to 32 points by the end of the night.

100 butterfly
In the morning, Indiana’s Bruno Blaskovic set a pool record and grabbed the top seed.
In the evening, Blaskovic was eighth in the A final with five swimmers quicker than his morning time.
That’s the kind of chaos you want to start a night session off with.
Alex Quach took the early initiative and led wire to wire with a time of 44.74. In addition to swiping Blaskovic’s pool mark, Quach took down the Big Ten Championships record set by Indiana’s Vini Lanza in 2018. Second was Tomer Frankel of Indiana, who reclaimed three tenths on the final 25 yards but came up .07 shy in 44.81. Both Quach and Frankel earned NCAA A cuts.
Indiana went from 1-2-4 in prelims to 1-4-8 in finals, with Gabriel Fantoni in the middle. Gal Groumi of Michigan, the top seed entering the meet, was third in 45.01.

400 individual medley
Jake Mitchell made things mighty interesting over the last 100 yards, turning fourth at 350 and charting with a 23.97 off the end to take second place. It wasn’t enough to overhaul teammate Jared Daigle, who won in 3:41.01. But Mitchell’s 3:41.39 jumped from fourth to second for vital points for the Wolverines.
Caleb Aman of Wisconsin was third in 3:41.42, while Penn State’s Michael Daly was fourth.

Jacob Newmark, the 500 free champ, was third in 1:33.15, a tenth up on Ohio State’s Ruslan Gaziev.

100 breaststroke
Minnesota’s Max McHugh, last year’s NCAA Champion in both breaststroke events, scorched the field here with a time of 50.67. McHugh’s time was just off his season-best time of 50.58, which ranks him first in the country as he aims for another national title in his senior campaign.
McHugh was followed closely by a pair of Indiana swimmers, Kevin Houseman and Josh Matheny. Houseman swam a time of 51.23, and the Indiana freshman Matheny touched in 51.65, and both should be contenders to score in the event at the upcoming NCAA Championships.

100 backstroke
Ohio State’s Hunter Armstrong edged out Indiana’s Brendan Burns in their backstroke leadoff legs in the 400 medley relay Thursday night, but Burns got the better of the Olympian this time, storming home on the final 25 to steal the conference title. Burns touched in 44.31, moving ahead of Armstrong’s relay leadoff time of 44.36 as the top time in the nation so far this season. Burns also broke the Big Ten record that Armstrong had set the previous night.
Armstrong ended up second here in 44.78, while Indiana continued its strong run with Gabriel Fantoni (45.05) and Jacob Steele (45.66) taking third and fourth, respectively. Those points took what was a six-point lead after breaststroke and swelled it to a 61-point edge.

3-meter diving
It must be nice to chase down a deficit like Indiana has knowing that a massive haul from diving is waiting, although Ohio State ended up negating that.
First atop the standings, where the two-time NCAA Champion rectified a rare hole on his resume: For the first time, Andrew Capobianco is a Big Ten champion on 3-meter. That may be a shock, but the Olympian and two-time Big Ten Diver of the Year has only finished fourth, second and third in his signature event.
Well, that narrative is gone thanks to a score of 467.75 that bested the field by nearly 16 points. Second was Purdue’s Jordan Rzepka, just .50 up on Indiana’s Quinn Henninger.
That should give the Hoosiers a massive edge, right? Add in Carson Tyler in fifth and hey that’s 84 points. But look further down and Ohio State stuffed the B final with divers in eighth, ninth, 10th, 13th, 14th and 15th. So it’s actually a net win for the Buckeyes, trimming the lead to an even 40 points.

200 freestyle relay
One more burst of momentum for the Buckeyes entering the final day. Hunter Armstrong’s 18.98 off the front put Ohio State in clear water on the way to a meet record, conference record and pool record 1:15.28. That’s also an NCAA A cut. Sem Andreis, Alex Quach and Ruslan Gaziev followed Armstrong’s lead, winning by a clear half-second.
Indiana (Bruno Blaskovic, Jack Franzman, Rafael Miroslaw, Van Mathias) were second in 1:15.81, also an A cut. Prudue added an A cut in third in 1:16.85, as did fourth-place Michigan.
