2022 ACC Championships: Youssef Ramadan Swims Top-Ranked 100 Fly; NC State Extends Men’s Team Lead

Through three days, North Carolina State has opened up a comfortable 209-point advantage in the men’s team race at the ACC Championships. Following a narrow loss to Louisville last season, NC State looks poised to reclaim the conference title previously won six straight years from 2015 through 2020, particularly after an impressive effort in the 200 freestyle when the Wolfpack finished 1-2 and had five swimmers competing in the A-final.

Meanwhile, Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan crushed a 44.08 in the men’s 100 fly to improve to fourth all-time in the event and set the fastest time in the nation so far this collegiate season. Louisville also had an impressive night with a win in the 200 medley relay and Daniel Sos claiming first in the 400 IM.

Men’s 200 Medley Relay

The Louisville Cardinals got off to a hot start by taking their first relay win of the competition. The team of Mitchell Whyte (20.94), Evgenii Somov (22.85), Dalton Lowe (19.50) and Abdelrahman Elaraby (18.55) captured the victory in 1:21.84, taking down the ACC record of 1:22.11 that Louisville set on the way to a victory in the event at last year’s NCAA Championships. The time was also fastest in the country this season.

Louisville had a strong lead entering the anchor leg, but Elaraby had to work hard to hold off charging NC State freshman David Curtiss. However, NC State was disqualified from the event because of a false start by Curtiss, so Louisville was the top team officially by almost a second.

Following the DQ, Virginia Tech’s Philip ManoffCarles Coll MartiAntoni Ivanov and Youssef Ramadan ended up in second place in 1:22.82, with Ramadan anchoring in 18.53. Florida State’s Mason HerbetIzaak BastianMax McCuster and Peter Varjasi were third in 1:23.15.

Men’s 400 IM

NC State’s Michael Moore led the 400 IM final by more than a second at the halfway point, but Louisville’s Daniel Sos took over the lead with stellar 31-second breaststroke splits, and he pulled away to win by more than a second. Sos won in 3:41.77, improving to sixth in the national rankings for this season. Louisville is now two-for-two in victories on the night after the Cardinals’ earlier medley relay win, but NC State still leads by more than 120 points in the standings.

Second place went to Virginia Tech’s Filippo Dal Maso in 3:42.67 as he surged ahead of Moore on the freestyle leg. Moore ended up hanging on for third in 3:43.47, one hundredth ahead of teammate Eric Knowles.

Men’s 100 Butterfly

Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan captured the ACC title in the 100 fly for the second straight year, and this time, he recorded the nation’s top time in the event. He clocked a time of 44.08, eclipsing the 44.41 that Luca Urlando swam earlier in the evening at the SEC Championships, and Ramadan also broke his own ACC record of 44.32 set last season.

Additionally, Ramadan moved to fourth all-time in the event. Only Caeleb DresselJoseph Schooling and Tom Shields have ever been quicker. Ramadan is now the fastest active swimmer in the college ranks, and his time even beat the 44.25 that Ryan Hoffer swam for the victory in the event at last year’s NCAA Championships.

Meanwhile, Virginia Tech completed the 1-2 finish as Antoni Ivanov in 44.73, just ahead of Louisville’s Nick Albiero in 44.79. Nyls Korstanje finished a close fourth in 44.82. All of those times would have been quick enough to qualify for the A-final at the NCAA Championships last season.

Men’s 200 Freestyle

NC State flexed its muscles in the 200 free as five Wolfpack A-finalists extended the team’s lead in the overall competition. Junior Hunter Tapp, who swam for the United States at the Short Course World Championships in December, had the lead with 50 yards to go, but sophomore Luke Miller split 23.69 on the final two lengths to come from behind and take the win. Miller touched in 1:32.46, while Tapp placed second in 1:32.72 to cement the 1-2 finish. Miller’s time was good for No. 7 in the national rankings.

Louisville’s Murilo Sartori placed third in 1:32.75, just three hundredths behind Tapp, while NC State also saw Noah Bowers finish fourth, Sam Hoover fifth and Bartosz Piszczorowicz seventh.
